Dear Colleagues:
The Faculty Senate, at its May 4th meeting, will vote on recommendations of the Committee on Committees for the 2006/2007 committee assignments. We would like to thank the faculty for their willingness to serve on the various committees and for their commitment to faculty governance.
This year we had 206 faculty requesting appointments to 243 seats on 33 committees. We have 18 vacant seats on all committees: 7 Faculty Senate Committee vacancies; 2 Joint committee vacancies, and 8 Student committee vacancies. One Student committee -- Advancing Respect for Individuals -- received no requests.
As we made assignments, the COC was mindful of three primary issues: continuity, work-load, and requests. First, the COC strove to maintain continuity on committees whenever possible. Individuals who requested reassignment to committees on which they were current members were reassigned.
Second, the COC worked to assign each individual to only one committee. The few instances where we assigned people to more than one committee were the result of situations where there were not enough volunteers for a particular committee, or were the result of the creation of the new IAS Committee in mid-year last year. Six people (other than CGAAF and Hearing) have dual appointments, and all agreed to those appointments. Four of the six are IAS dual appointments; two others are on committees we had no other requests for. Both people agreed to the dual appointments.
Third, the COC worked to place every person who volunteered on a committee, and we made every effort to have placements correspond to preferences. However, since some committees once again had many more volunteers than vacancies, and since some people volunteered for only one or two committees, it was not possible for us to accommodate everyone. Insofar as possible, though, we did place most people not assigned as alternates on one of their committee preferences.
Finally, we did our best to balance committee membership by rank, college, gender, and ethnicity (not necessarily in that order).
For the third year now, shortly after the faculty received the application for committee assignments, the COC sent an email to all faculty members reminding them about the procedure. We encouraged faculty to volunteer for at least three committees to maximize their chances of being assigned to a committee. A good many faculty again followed this suggestion, giving the COC the flexibility needed to assure assignments to as many people as possible.
Thanks again to all of you for your commitment to insuring a continuing strong tradition of faculty governance at UW-La Crosse.
Respectfully submitted,
Faculty Senate Committee on Committees, 2005/2006
