The 2005-2006 Undergraduate Curriculum Committee consisted of the following faculty and student:

New Programs

 

On February 9, 2006 the UCC approved the Inclusive Recreation Minor (21 credits).  The new minor was approved by the Academic Planning Committee on February 2, 2006.  Chair Miller brought a motion before the Faculty Senate to approve the new minor on April 6, 2006.  The motion was passed unanimously by the Faculty Senate.

 

In addition to the new minor, UCC considered hundreds of revisions to current courses and programs as well as new course proposals.  Each of these proposals and the action taken by UCC are detailed in the minutes of the meetings.

 

Committee Charge

 

At the beginning of the Spring 2006 academic semester, the UCC was charged by the Faculty Senate to develop a policy for outlining the role of UCC in dealing with courses converting to online or distance education formats.  In response to this charge, the UCC has approved the following recommendations:

 

1.      Departments must indicate online, hybrid or distance education courses so that Records and Registration can appropriately designate these courses in the timetable.

 

2.      The following definitions shall apply:

 

Online courses are those in which all, or nearly all, instruction is delivered over the internet.

 

Hybrid courses require online learning as well as traditional in-class instruction.

 

Distance education courses utilize real time two-way communication between instructor and student.

 


 

3.      Current courses converting to one of the above formats would require review by UCC only if the conversion is accompanied by a change that currently warrants UCC approval (i.e. a change in course objectives, addition or deletion of prerequisites, credit change, changes in instructional methods and evaluation procedures, etc.).

 

4.      New course proposals utilizing one of the above formats should address the following topics:

 

How is the credit count determined?

How is the instructor contact hour load determined?

What is the role of the instructor?

How are student/instructor interactions facilitated?

How are the students assessed?

 

Proposed By-Law Changes for Handling Appeals for Requirements in the General Education Program

 

Background

 

The Faculty Senate in establishing by-laws and responsibilities for committees gave oversight of student appeals for course substitution or waivers to the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee (UCC).  This was done prior to the establishment of a Director of General Education and prior to a change in the length of time members could serve on the General Education Committee (GEC) (members can serve up to five years).  Now that there is more continuity and stability in the oversight of the General Education Program, UCC proposes that GEC be the oversight committee for student appeals pertaining to credit or requirements in the General Education Program/University Core Curriculum.

 

Rationale

 

The Director of General Education and the GEC have the most knowledge and understanding of the program requirements, and the program goals and learning outcomes.  After courses have been approved by UCC, the GEC is responsible for insuring the appropriateness of courses in the program relative to program goals and outcomes.  Thus, it seems appropriate that the Director, in concert with the GEC, be the body to which appeals pertaining to the requirements of the General Education Program/University Core Curriculum be brought.  This would include course or credit appeals as well as appeals related to the Writing Emphasis requirement.
