Faculty Senate Executive Committee Minutes
4:00 p.m. – 327 Graff Main Hall
Oct. 7, 2008
Present: Joe Heim, Rebecca LeDocq, Susan Crutchfield, Brian Udermann;
Visitors: Kathleen Enz Finken, Bob Hoar
1. Minutes of the Sept. 23 and Sept. 30 SEC Meetings were approved.
[This occurred out of order at the end of the meeting.]
2. SEC Meeting Start Time
It was decided that meetings would begin at 4:15 p.m. rather than 4 p.m.
3. Changing a Senate Committee’s Set Meeting Time
Concerns were expressed to the SEC about changing the set meeting time of a Senate committee. Discussion: Shouldn’t set meeting times remain set in order to allow visitors? Should the Senate act on this? There is currently no rule regarding changing set meeting times. It was decided not to act at this time.
4. Proposal from Dept. of Economics to Move SEIs Online
Which Senate committee should consider this item?
5. Required Courses Online
This question came from the Online Advisory Group: is it acceptable for a department to offer a course required for its major/minor only online?
Two issues are involved: the extra fee for an online course, and the single mode of access to the course. Should this be the decision of the individual departments? Students should be apprised of this online requirement before they declare their major/minors. What are other campuses’ policies on this, and should the Senate be consulted?
6. Senate Agenda Items This Week
A. The CAPS Incomplete Policy
This will be on this week’s Senate agenda.
B. UW-L 3.05/3.06 Bylaws Change
Consensus was that this should be brought up under New Business at Senate this week.
7. Evaluation of Administrative Offices
Whether Senate should continue this process will come before the Senate for discussion at a later date.
8. GEC Director Position
Is it advantageous to continue the Director position. It was decided to consult GEC Chair Anne Galbraith on this issue in coordination with the Provost.
9. Committee Structures
The Provost observed we have a lot of committees and may want to review our committee structure for any redundancies. The Committee on Committees could review this.
10. The meeting was adjourned at 5:15 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Susan Crutchfield
