1. Provost’s E-mail message of today
The Provost’s message clarified that new faculty just hired will still have positions. They will be required to take furloughs in the same manner as other faculty. Exactly how furloughs will be taken has not been determined. The Chancellor will discuss budget issues at Senate this week.
2. Minutes from the May 5, 2009 SEC meeting were approved.
3. Faculty Representative’s Report (Georges Cravins)
The political climate has changed positively toward System. This year has seen more faculty-academic staff joint meetings.
4. Textbook Rental Policy
The Senate has been asked by the Textbook Rental Policy committee to endorse the new TR policy it drafted.
Motion: to endorse the policy from the ad hoc Textbook Rental Policy Committee.
5. Academic Program Review
There was discussion of how to handle the backlog of department reviews due to no reports being completed this year.
Motion: to recommend suspending the bylaws of the APR committee for one year to increase the APR committee membership by three to deal with the backlog of this year’s reports.
6. Committee on Committees
Some complaints have come in, specifically a concern that the guidelines for filling small committees were breached in placing Steven Senger on the Budget Review Committee. This concern is alleviated by the facts that 1. Steven Senger has a joint appointment in Math and CS, and 2. continuity on committees is the higher priority guideline that was followed in this case.
There is no information yet on how this will be administered. There was some discussion of concerns and of various ways the furloughs could be taken.
8. Medical Dosimetry Degree
There was discussion of where the plan for the program is in the approval process.
9. Adjournment at 4:01 p.m.
