1.           Announcements:
Chair Schoen authored and distributed a memo suggesting possible changes to the way UCC guides itself. The memo will be used as a basis for future discussions.

4.           First Reading, Proposal #45, ACC 221, 222, title and description, effective fall 2001; ACC 235, prerequisites, effective fall 2000.

 

ACC 221, Accounting Principles I, 3 credits, title and description, effective fall 2001.

        “An introduction to accounting as an information system. Emphasis is on reporting to eternal constituencies: investors, creditors, and governmental agencies. Topics include recording economic activities of the firm and the resultant financial reports, federal income taxation, and time value of money. Prerequisite: student must have successfully completed a minimum of 12 credit hours.”

 

ACC 222, Accounting Principles II, 3 credits, title and description, effective fall 2001.

        “Emphasis is on reporting to internal constituencies: managers in all functional areas of the firm. An introduction to accounting principles used to prepare internal financial reports used for management decision making. Topics include cost determination and flow, cost-volume-profit analysis, absorption and variable costing, capital budgeting, and cash flow analysis. Prerequisite: A grade of “C” or better in ACC 221.”

 

ACC 235, Survey of Accounting, 3 credits, prerequisite, effective fall 2000.

        Prerequisite: students must have completed a minimum of 12 credit hours (not open to students in the CBA).

 

ACC 221 and 222 are being updated to reflect changes that have occurred over a period of time and to more accurately reflect what is taught. The prerequisite for 221 and 235 was changed from sophomore standing to 12 credits for consistency purposes and to allow students easier access to both courses, since most programs accept either 221 or 235.

 

M/S/P to waive the second reading and approve the proposal.

 

5.           First Reading, Proposal #46, HON 203 and 204, change number, effective spring 2001.

        HON 203, Literary Studies: The Battle of the Books (formerly GHR 330)

        HON 204 Human Nature, Culture, and Reality (formerly GHR 400)

 

This proposal is a continuation of the changes approved last fall, and is consistent with published honors numbering guidelines.

 

M/S/P to waive the second reading and approve the proposal.

 

6.           First Reading, Proposal #47, Medical Laboratory Science Major, credits and required courses, effective fall 2000. Professional curriculum Preclinical phase requirements (33 credits) - add MLS 449. Professional curriculum Clinical phase requirements (31 credits) - add MLS 492 and 493.

 

                                        Last spring when these courses were approved, an LX138P to add these courses to the major was not submitted.

 

                                        M/S/P to waive the second reading and approve the proposal.

 

 

                              7.       First Reading, Proposal #48, MIC 102, Global Bioterrorism, 1 credit, new course, effective fall 2001.

        “An overview of current potential biological warfare agents. Topic areas will include an historical overview, an explanation of differences in the classes of biological warfare agents (disease, production, dissemination, risks), our preparedness to meet this threat, “black biology” to design more effective agents, and counter measures to prevent a biological warfare catastrophe. Offered Sem. I.

 

Questions were raised regarding the title, the scientific term black biology, and offering the course for one credit. The department will consider changing the title, and will remove the words black biology from the catalog course description, but not the course content/outline. The course will be offered as a one credit course, but may be expanded in the future. The department plans to seek Gen Ed approval.

 

M/S/F to approve on the first reading.  There will be a second reading.

 

8.           First Reading, Proposal #49, Biology Major, Minor, Concentration and Core, replace BIO 101 with BIO 103 or BIO 105, effective fall 2001.

 

BIO 101, Introduction to Biological Sciences, 4 credits, delete course, effective fall 2001.

 

BIO 103, Introductory Biology, 4 credits, new course, effective fall 2001.

      “A survey of modern biology. Subjects discussed include ecology, cell biology and genetics. Theses developed through the course are the use of the scientific method and the relationships between society, technology and science. This course is designed as a general education course for non-science or non-allied health majors.Lect. 3, Lab. 2. Cannot earn credit in both BIO 103 and 105.”

 

BIO 105, General Biology, 4 credits, new course, effective 2001.

      “An introduction to biology including topics in ecology, population biology, nutrient cycling, food webs, cell structure and function, metabolism, photosynthesis, reproduction, genetics, molecular biology and evolution. This course provides a strong foundation for further science courses, and is designed for science majors, allied health majors and students with an interest in science. Lect. 3, Lab. 2. Cannot earn credit in both BIO 103 and 105.”

 

While the course descriptions for BIO 103 and 105 are different, the course outlines are identical, which led to the question why two courses are being proposed. In answer to the question, the department rep explained that although the outlines are the same, the topics will be taught differently in each class, and that this proposal is the initial step toward the migration of a large pool of Biology students currently in BIO 101 (which will be deleted) into two tracks, one for science majors, and one for non-science majors. The department has been working on this change for a year and anticipates it will benefit students. BIO 101 did not meet the need of all students. A title change to Survey of Biology was suggested for 103; but the department was not amiable to that. Gen Ed approval will be sought by the department for 103 and 105.

 

M/S/F to approve the proposal on the first reading. There will be a second reading.

10.        New Business

Consultant/Registrar D. Schumacher presented a blanket proposal for four items that were previously approved through UCC, but required minor changes. The items are listed below:

 

1.        Microbiology major—the only MLS course that will be included as an elective is MLS 425 under list 2. No MLS courses will be allowed as electives in the pre-professional emphasis.

 

2.        Therapeutic Recreation major—
FROM: Therapeutic recreation majors must pass all required REC and RTH courses with a grade of ”C” or better    

  TO: Therapeutic recreation majors must pass all professional core and elective courses with a grade of “C” or better.

 

 

 

 

 

3.        Last year UCC approved exception of a writing emphasis course in the major for a group of music education majors. Their advisor had told them that their major was education, therefore they should not take a music writing emphasis course. They had taken 3 WE courses in EFN and PSY. One student, Cindi Hoch, was omitted from that list.

 

4.        MIC 461, 1 credit

 

FROM: Capstone in Biology/Microbiology “ A seminar-style course designed for students to review and discuss basic concepts necessary for a career in the biological sciences and to assess their major in biology or microbiology….”

 

TO:  Capstone in Microbiology “ A seminar-style course designed for students to review and discuss basic concepts necessary for a career in the biological sciences and to assess their major in microbiology….”

 

Course was duplicated from BIO 461 when the departments split, but reference to biology was not removed.

 

M/S/P to approve Items 2, 3, and 4. Item #1 warrants further discussion between the Microbiology and Medical Laboratory Science departments regarding the elimination of all but MLS 425 as an elective in the Microbiology major.

 

There will be a second reading for Item #1.

 

In the future, UCC will try to use this format to approve/disapprove simple proposals by a blanket vote.
