The fifth meeting of the Spring Semester 2001 for the Undergraduate Research Committee began at 5:30pm Monday, April 2.
Present: Lloyd Bogart, Carl Foster, Anne Galbraith, Bill Gresens, Rick Rodrick, and Chia-Chen Yu.
Next year's Celebration has been scheduled for April 12.
As far as this year's celebration is concerned, the food is ordered, the stickers are "on", the buttons for the presenters may not happen, and the table tents/banners for advertising will not happen due to "overbooking" of these media types by other events. However, advertising will occur by 1) posters designed by the communication studies students and 2) an e-mail to faculty and students from Anne via Steve Stach.
On Friday, there will be 8 oral presentation sessions, four from 10-1145 and four from 1215-2. Rick will be soliciting help from the URC to moderate these sessions. Presenters can "practice" their talks Thursday from 3-6 in Port o' Call or room 326. Poster set-up will begin Friday morning at 9 and the poster session will run from 10-2.
For next Monday's meeting, committee members are asked to read through the proposals and to use the evaluation/scoring/comment sheets to take notes to prepare for the discussion of each proposal next week. These comment sheets will be turned in to Bill when the evaluation process is completed but will not actually be seen by the students. However, Bill asks that we not simply make general statements about the proposals such as "This was great!" since the comments will be used by Bill to answer questions that students may have about how their proposals were evaluated and specific detailed comments would be more useful.
Our budget for next year should allow us to fund approximately $35-40K worth of grant proposals.
Keep in mind that next Monday's meeting begins at 5:30 and ends when we are finished with all of the proposals. Last year it took 3-1/2 hours to discuss about 40 grants and this year there are 54.
Meeting ended at 6:30 pm.
