Minutes of March 13, 2002 Meeting
Present: Gwen Achenreiner,
Abdulaziz Elfessi, Tim Gerber, James Gray, Jason Letizia, Elsie Patterson, Cris
Prucha, Hulya Yacizi, Chia-Chen Yu
Consultant: Anita Evans
Guest: Michele Strange
Meeting called to order at 4 p.m. in Room 120 of Murphy Library by chair
Chia-Chen Yu.
·
Minutes of Feb. 20, 2002 meeting approved without dissent.
·
Chia-Chen Yu and Anita Evans reported on their meeting on March 6
with UW Student Regent Tommie Jones, who visited the library as part of his
official duties.
·
The committee discussed circulation policies for faculty. The
particular impetus for the discussion was a letter from Dr. Jana Evans-Braziel,
of the English department.
Michelle Strange reported that, effective the morning of this meeting, overdue
items can now be renewed on-line after the due date. Moreover, Michelle
reported, library staff is considering revamping on-line renewal forms (those
accessible via the library’s web page) so that faculty can renew all
checked-out items with one on-line form (“universal renewal”), rather than
having to fill out a separate on-line form for each item.
Finally, the committee discussed the possibility of extending the check-out
period for videos from three days to seven days (with one renewal). Library
staff will study this possibility.
·
The committee discussed whether and how the library might present
its Information Literacy efforts to faculty audiences as part of the Teaching
Conference that takes place in January, during the week before classes begin.
Discussion focused on taking part in a panel presentation, with faculty members
invited to participate who have incorporated “information literacy”
comprehensively into their courses. Cris Prucha will contact Emily Johnson (the
director of general education) and Bill Cerbin, who coordinates the January
teaching conference.
·
Jason Letizia, student member of the committee, mentioned concerns
among education program students that the library’s collection of primary,
middle, and secondary school textbooks could not be checked out; this may be a
serious inconvenience for students assigned to evaluate such textbooks. Library
staff will look into the matter.
·
Anita Evans reported upcoming visits to the library by Cora
Marrett, UW System Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs (March 20,
2:30-3:00 p.m.); and by Phyllis Krutsch, UW Regent (March 27, 1:30-2:30 pm).
·
Anita Evans reported that, in the still-early stages of budget
planning, the library was working to identify how to meet its earmarked $14,000
base budget cut. An exact amount for the budget cut will be set by the
Chancellor toward the end of the semester. Discussion has focused so far on
slowing down the replacement cycle for library computers. Currently, the library
has 136 computers, and they are replaced in a cycle of three to five years. If
this replacement cycle slowdown is implemented, that total number of library
computers may decrease somewhat.
·
Next meeting announced for Wednesday, April 10, 2002, 4 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
James Gray
