Promotion, Tenure and Salary Committee Meeting

I.                    Old Business: Senate’s Charge:  Service and Promotion/Tenure/Retention/Merit:

Joint Promotion Committee Representatives Sandi Krajewski and Pam Rodgers joined our discussion to help us understand the Service expectations for promotion.



·        The Wisconsin Idea of Service commitments to the community has not been heard of by many faculty. This is the campus compact that we use our expertise in the community.

·        Some colleges (e.g. HPERTE) de-emphasize service

·        Candidates must develop a service reputation in discipline or university to be promoted; it can be national, or it can be local/community, but some at UW-L is needed.

·        For promotion to full, must be a campus leader

·        For promotion in general, must exhibit diverse service:  Dept. activities, at least one university committee, Wisc. Idea

·        Don’t need to be on more than one university committee at one time

·        In response to a question about how department service is viewed:  “I think departments successfully argue on behalf of the their candidates.”

·        Fears we won’t be able to keep new faculty if they burn out on doing too much service

·        There isn’t a united JPC with regard to expectations.  They usually meet and get standards set before they see the files.  They haven’t done that yet.

·        Part of the problem is that the JPC rotates 1/3 of its members each academic year.



·        Service is the only category where candidates can be a little weak and still get promoted.

·        Chairing committees is important for promotion to full.

·        Young faculty hesitate to go on faculty governance, and Deans tell faculty to avoid it.  Because of this, Faculty Governance begins to denigrate.  People get afraid that they are wasting their time, it’s not valuable.

·        Committee work is important in getting exposure.  It’s easier to get promoted if the people on JPC have an idea of who you are.


       Misc. – one faculty committee/year is a suggestion;  however, one needs to take into consideration the number of times it meets, and the amount of work the committee completes.  Some committees are more active than others.


PTS Comments:

·        Lost positions in departments has translated into fewer people to serve on dept. committees.  Is department service important to JPC?  The reply was that experienced faculty need to mentor new people to have priorities – but only doing department service and nothing else, will hurt them (new faculty).

·        Service on Faculty Senate committees results in “just recommending” policies, ideas to faculty senate.

·        Administration already has made up their minds on policies, ideas, etc.

·        Can we have a “qualitative” measure of what is expected for promotion, like having a “national reputation” for scholarship?

·        Service is one way to get to know the culture and build that culture on campus.  You build roads between colleges/departments.

·        After having good service experiences, you do it because you want to.

·        How about a Service Day, like Research Day and Teaching Day?


     Misc. Comment regarding promotion:  The policy and procedures for going up for promotion early was meant for people who come in with previous tenure track experience.
