Meeting was called to order at 1:10 p.m. in Room 120, Murphy Library.
Minutes. M/S/P. Minutes of the December 7, 2005 were approved with the addition of a suggestion from William Barillas that a riser or a stage be incorporated into the proposed Library café. Chair Kattchee will add this comment to the minutes.
Coffee café. The UW Regents are meeting this week and are expected to approve the extension of Chartwell’s food service contract for UW-La Crosse, which includes a coffee café for Murphy Library. Assuming the Regents approve the contract, the café is projected to open this fall. How to prepare for this? The Faculty Senate Library Committee brainstormed and came up with the following suggestions for the cafe: a website, marketing campaign, grand opening celebration, displaying student artwork, prominent signage, and comfortable furniture. Assuming the contract is approved, Committee members should seek feedback from their colleagues and take a look at the Extended Study area, the projected location for the café, prior to our next meeting.
Segregated fees. Chair Kattchee had discussions with Larry Ringgenberg about securing a segregated fee for the Library. Larry cited several UW System and Regent policy documents and said he didn’t see anything in those documents that would allow it. Yet, Karl’s understanding is that the documents don’t specifically ban the idea. We could still take the idea of a segregated fee to the Student Apportionment Committee, which looks at allocable funding. We should ask UW System whether a library segregated fee is allowed or not and go back and meet with Larry Ringgenberg. If it is allowed, we could then approach the students next year with this idea.
Director’s Report. Anita Evans attended the Wisconsin Library Associations’s Legislative Day at the Capitol on January 31. Message delivered was the impact on libraries of UW System cuts coupled with rising costs such as replacing the library server and going to a system hub and added software expenses due to Metalib and SFX.
