Faculty Development Committee Meeting

Minutes for Wednesday, November 3, 2010

1)      Meeting called to order at 2:20pm by M. Cary, chair.

2)      M/S/P approval of minutes of 10/27/2010 committee meeting with amendments. [Yes- 8, No- 0, Abstain-0].

3)      Discussion of submission dates for FDC proposals.  Options considered include staying with two submissions (one in the fall semester and one in the spring semester), or move to one single submission date in the spring. Consensus was to leave as is for now (i.e., a fall submission date with a spring submission when sufficient funds remain in the spring).

4)      Reviewed Proposal Review Procedures and discussed interviewing recipients of FDC grants.

5)      M/S/P to approve a change in language on the Overview of the Faculty Development Committee document, under “Proposal Review Procedures” point #2 to read “The Committee may interview Professional Development Grant applicants who request a leave from campus. The Committee does not interview non-leave applicants.”  [Yes-8, No-0, Abstain-0]

6)      Reviewed Guidelines and Applications for Faculty Development Committee Grants and discussed applicants seeking out assistance in developing their assessments of their proposals.

7)      M/S/P to approve and add the following statement to the Teaching Innovation Grant Application’s Body of Proposal, C. Assessment: “Explain how you will assess the effects of the changes on student learning.  The Faculty Development Committee highly recommends applicants consult the University Assessment coordinator when developing this assessment.” [Yes-8, No-0, Abstain-0]

8)      M/S/P to approve and add the following statement to the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning Grant Application’s Body of Proposal, C. Assessment: “Describe the plan to assess how the project affects student learning. Be sure to describe the anticipated student learning outcomes and how you will measure them.  The Faculty Development Committee highly recommends applicants consult the University Assessment coordinator when developing this assessment.” [Yes-8, No-0, Abstain-0]

9)      M/S/P to approve and add the following statement to the Professional Development Grant Application’s Body of Proposal, C. Assessment of impact. “Describe how you will assess the impact of the project and the extent to which it achieves the objectives. The Faculty Development Committee highly recommends applicants consult the University Assessment coordinator when developing this assessment.” [Yes-8, No-0, Abstain-0]

10)  Discussed the remaining funds of FDC.  M/S/P to recommend to the Provost that the remaining funds of $571 be reallocated to the committee overseeing the Inclusive Excellence Grants.  [Yes-8, No-0, Abstain-0]
