Faculty Development Committee
RE: Special Committee Charge
DATE: November 4, 2004
The Faculty Development Committee was given the special charge to
“Report, during the fall of 2004, on the resources committed to supporting faculty development at the university (including university-wide and college programs, international education/scholarship programs, and programs supported by the UW-L Foundation).”
To complete the charge, committee members gathered information from across the campus using both websites and input from various offices. We asked for information on funds available for faculty development, but we did not define “faculty development”. The definition of faculty development used will make a difference in the findings, so we want to clarify three assumptions the Committee has made.
- Funds designated solely for support of research activities, such as the Faculty Research Grants or funding for travel to a conference in order to present a paper, are not included.
- Each college/department has certain funds available for travel. Some of these travel funds may be used for faculty to attend conferences or workshops for the purpose of updating skills, gaining new expertise, etc. While the Committee recognizes these activities as faculty development, determining what portion of the travel funds in each department are used in this capacity would be difficult if not impossible. Thus, departmental travel funds are not included.
- The Committee noted that there was very little mention of granting release time as a form of faculty development. While this certainly occurs on campus, in most cases, it does not appear to be a formal program or one that is advertised in any real way. Therefore, with one exception (in SAH), the Committee was not able to include this type of funding.
Under these assumptions, the Committee has compiled the information that was collected in the enclosed document. The Committee found it very difficult to peruse the UW-L website to find this information. A re-designing of the internal grants web page might be helpful, or perhaps a document similar to this could be made available to all faculty.
