UW-L Financial Aid Policies

Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy
Federal Law mandates that post secondary institutions participating in Federal Title IV Student Financial Aid Programs, including educational loans, have in place and monitor an academic progress policy for financial aid.

There are three components to the UW-La Crosse Satisfactory Academic Progress Standard for Financial Aid:

1. Grade Point Average (GPA)
2. 70% Rule (credits earned / credits attempted)
3. 150% Rule

1. Grade Point Average (GPA)
: The Academic Deans at UW-La Crosse monitor grade point average. The grade point average provisions of the Academic Progress Policy are listed in the UW- La Crosse catalog. Failure to meet these conditions will result in the student being academically suspended from UW-L. The student will also lose eligibility for student financial aid, including educational loans. Notification of non-compliance with the GPA component and appeal procedure for reinstatement is performed by the Academic Deans. The student should notify the UW-L Financial Aid Office in writing of academic reinstatement. The UW-L Financial Aid Office will then determine eligibility for financial aid.

2. Academic Progress (70% Rule):
All full-time and part-time undergraduate and all full-time and part-time graduate students at UW-La Crosse must annually complete and pass a minimum of 70% of all credits attempted at UW-La Crosse. This will be monitored on a yearly basis, September through August. Failure to comply with this component will result in the student's financial aid eligibility, including educational loans, being suspended.

3. Academic Progress (150% Rule):
The Federal Government has established that an eligible undergraduate student can receive Federal Title IV Student Financial Aid while attempting up to but not exceeding 150% of the published normal completion length of a student's program. Credits transferred to UW-La Crosse, and any credits attempted at UW-L with or without the benefit of student financial aid must be taken into consideration. Please note that the 150% Rule does not apply to Graduate Students.

A. CREDITS EARNED: The successful completion of a credit attempted is credit for which a grade of A, AB, B, BC, C, D, S, or P is received. The grade of D for a Graduate Student is not considered as successful completion of the credit(s) attempted.

B. WITHDRAWAL: Any withdrawal after the start of a grading period will count as credit attempted and credit not earned. The exception to this is a military call up.

C. CREDIT DROP: Any credit drop after the start of the grading period, without an equal number of credits being added the same date of the drop or at a later date, will count as credit attempted and credit not earned.

D. INCOMPLETES: An incomplete grade will count as credit attempted and credit not earned until the UW-L Recores and Registration Office has recorded a passing grade. It will be the responsibility of the student to notify the UW-L Financial Aid Office of any change in grade using an Appeal for Financial Aid Reinstatement Form and attaching a copy of the student's most recent UW-L academic transcript.

E. REPEATED CREDITS: Credits repeated will be counted as attempted credits as many times as the course is repeated. Examples: 1) a three-credit class is repeated and the second passed grade become the grade of record. The student has attempted six credits and has earned three credits, 2) the same scenario but the second grade is an "F". The student has attempted six credits and has earned no credits. This normally applies to the 150% Rule.

F. SUSPENSION: A student not meeting the condition(s) of a financial aid probation, or not meeting the 70% Rule or the 150% Rule of the Satisfactory Academic Progress Standard for Financial Aid, will be notified by the UW-L Financial Aid Office that the student's eligibility for financial aid, including educational loans, has been suspended. The student can make an appointment in the Financial Aid Office, Room 215 in Graff Main Hall, to discuss the situation.

G. REINSTATEMENT: A student can submit an Appeal for Financial Aid Reinstatement Form outlining the reason for failure in meeting the Satisfactory Academic Progress Standard for Financial Aid, and how the condition has changed. A copy of the student's current UW-L academic transcript must accompany the Appeal Form along with appropriate third-party documentation if necessary or requested. If the appeal is approved, the Financial Aid Office will determine eligibility for financial aid and notify the student. If an Appeal for Financial Aid Reinstatement is not approved, the student may have to attend UW-L, pay for it on his or her own, do well, and complete the appeal process again.

H. STUDY ABROAD: Grades for credits attempted in study abroad programs are historically slow in being reported to the UW-L Records and Registration Office. These credits are considered as credits attempted and credits not earned until the passing grades are posted by the UW-L Records and Registration Office. Per Federal Law a student in this situation will be placed on financial aid suspension and must appeal for financial aid reinstatement (see REINSTATEMENT above.) Without any other circumstances, action on the appeal will probably place the student on financial aid probation. When the study abroad grades are posted by the UW-L Records and Registration Office, and if the student is on financial aid probation or suspension, the student should notify the UW-L Financial Aid Office on an Appeal Form with a copy of the updated UW-L transcript of the grades being posted. Without any other circumstances, action on the appeal will probably place the student back in good standing for financial aid.
