Grants are considered gift aid that is not to be repaid. Applicants will be considered for all grant assistance when applying for financial aid.

Federal Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG)
    An Academic Competitiveness Grant will provide up to $750 for the first year of undergraduate study and up to $1,300 for the second year of undergraduate study to full-time students who are eligible for a Federal Pell Grant and who had successfully completed a rigorous high school program, as determined by the state or local education agency and recognized by the Secretary of Education.
    To be eligible for the AC Grant, students:
    * Must apply for financial aid by submitting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and have been determined to be eligible for a Federal Pell Grant. Students who have not yet submitted a FAFSA may do so online at www.fafsa.ed.gov;
    * Must be a U.S. Citizen;
    * Must be enrolled in a two- or four-year degree program; and
    * Must be enrolled fulltime
    In addition,
    * Students must be in their first or second academic year of a two- or four-year degree program;
    * First-year students must have completed high school on or after January 1, 2006;
    * Second-year students must have completed high school on or after January 1, 2005;
    * All AC Grant students must have completed a rigorous high school program of study as designated by their state; and
    * For a second-year AC Grant, students must have a grade point average (GPA) from their first year of at least 3.0.
  
    The Academic Competitiveness Grant award is in addition to the student's Pell Grant award.

National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant (National SMART Grant)
    A National SMART Grant will provide up to $4,000 for each of the third and fourth years of undergraduate study to full-time students who are eligible for a Federal Pell Grant and who are majoring in physical, life, or computer sciences, mathematics, technology, or engineering or in a foreign language determined critical to national security.

    To be eligible for the National Smart Grant, students:
    * Must apply for financial aid by submitting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and have been determined to be eligible for a Federal Pell Grant. Students who have not yet submitted a FAFSA may do so online at www.fafsa.ed.gov;
    * Must be a U.S. Citizen;
    * Must be enrolled in a four-year degree program; and
    * Must be enrolled fulltime
    In addition,
    * Students must be in their third or fourth year of a four-year degree program;
    * Students must be pursuing a major in mathematics, science (including physical, life, and computer sciences), technology, engineering, or a critical foreign language, such as Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Japanese and Russian;
    * Students must have a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0; and
    * Student must be enrolled in at least one course specific to and required for their National SMART Grant-eligible major each semester they receive the grant. General degree requirement courses do not meet this criteria.

    The National SMART Grant award is in addition to the student's Pell Grant award.
    UW-La Crosse students eligible for the SMART Grant must have one of the following majors: Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics, Microbiology or Physics.
