Dr. Gargi Chaudhuri

The UW-L Geography and Earth Science Department is pleased to announce the appointment of  Dr. Gargi Chaudhuri to our faculty beginning with the 2012 Fall Semester.

Gargi is from Kolkata, India and received her B.Sc from Shri Shikshaytan College, University of Calcutta with Geography Honors and specialization in Cartography. During her graduate study she completed a certificate course in GIS from Webel India. Her Master's thesis focused on application of cartographic and GIS techniques to analyze the status and development of transport infrastructure in Kolkata during the five years plan period of 2000 - 2005. In 2007, she joined the University of California Santa Barbara to begin work on her Ph. D. in Geography. During her doctoral studies, she worked on capturing and analyzing the effects of political history on land use change in the Italian and Slovenian international border region using satellite imagery, urban growth simulation, and GIS. During her stay in Santa Barbara, she worked with Asha-Santa Barbara, an organization providing financial and logistical support for small NGOs in India who work to enhance the education of under-privileged children. Following completion of her Ph. D., Gargi worked as a postdoctoral fellow with the Resilience and Adaptive Management Group at the University of Alaska Anchorage, investigating the relationship between land use change and water resource vulnerability.

Gargi's present research include mapping and modeling land use and land cover change in India, with particular interest in the Ganges delta region.

In her time away from campus, Gargi enjoys travelling, reading and photography.
