Income Continuation Insurance
Employees who participate in the Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS) are eligible for Income Continuation Insurance, which replaces a portion of your income in the event of a disability. Benefits from this plan are integrated with other programs such as Social Security and the Wisconsin Retirement System. Eligibility is dependent upon completion of six months WRS service. Coverage is effective the first of the month following with the completion of an Application. More complete information can be obtained in the Income Continuation Booklet.
Premiums are taken for the month of coverage on your specific payroll. Example: Coverage is effective April 1st; unclassified employees monthly premium will be paid in the April payroll paid May 1st. Classified employees will see there premium paid in the A payroll each month for the corresponding months coverage.
Standard Income Continuation Insurance is available to all individuals that earn up to $64,000/year and the state does contribute to these premium payments.
Supplemental Income Continuation Insurance is available to all individuals that earn over $64,000/year. However, premiums are paid totally by the employee.
Classified employees accumulate sick leave and this determines the Classified premiums based on specific categories of sick leave balances for the standard coverage. Classified employees eligible for supplemental coverage will also pay the corresponding Supplemental premiums for their standard coverage category.
Unclassified employees (faculty and academic staff) choose an
elimination period (30, 90, 125, and 180 day) until benefits
begin.
Unclassified premiums for standard coverage are based
on the elimination period selected and annual salary.
Unclassified
Supplemental premiums are based on the elimination period
selected for standard coverage and annual salary.
Benefits for either classified or unclassified staff become available after satisfying the elimination period, or use of all sick leave benefits (maximum of 1,040 hours), whichever is longer.
Individuals that do not enroll in this program during their open enrollment opportunity may obtain coverage through “evidence of insurability” or through deferred coverage opportunities. Evidence of insurability forms may be obtained in the Human Resources office.
Classified Staff may be eligible for deferred coverage during January each year if they have attained a new category in their sick leave balances.
Unclassified Staff may be eligible for deferred coverage by attaining specific amounts of sick leave.
