Classified Vacation Options:  Termination/Sabbatical Leave

A. Employees who have 15 to 24 years of State service may elect to receive 40 hours of their earned vacation, or prorated portion thereof, as one or more of the following options:

  1. Annual leave (take the time off as vacation); or
  2. Sabbatical-termination credit (to be paid at termination).

B. Employees covered by the WSEU, WPEC, WSP, Engineering, Science bargaining units, and non-represented employees who have less than 15 years of State service and have accumulated a minimum of 520 hours of sick leave may also elect to receive 40 hours of their earned vacation as one or more of the options listed in A above. There is no proration of the required 520 sick leave hours or 40 hours of earned vacation for part-time employees. Once an employee has accumulated the 520 hours of sick leave, eligibility becomes permanent even if their accumulated sick leave subsequently drops below the 520-hour balance.

C. Employees who have 25 or more years of State service may elect to receive 80 hours of their earned vacation, or prorated portion thereof, as one or more of the following options:

  1. Cash payments - not to exceed 40 hours;
  2. Annual leave (take the time off as vacation); or
  3. Sabbatical leave or termination credit (to be paid at termination).

Human Resources determines employee eligibility for these options in November of each year and forms for selecting an option are sent to eligible employees. If an employee chooses the cash option, it will be paid on the last paycheck received in December.
