H1N1 Flu Information

UW-L Employees:
As part of the UW-L preparation to manage any outbreaks of the
H1N1 flu on campus, we are requesting your assistance in helping
us monitor the presence, location and spread of flu like
symptoms on our campus, specifically those experienced by our
employees. The Student Health Center is monitoring student
flu cases. By tracking the location and number of ill
employees we can better determine if our emergency plan needs to
be activated, and to what level.
When an individual experiences flu like symptoms the recommended
course of action is to remain at home until 24 hours after the
fever has ended without the use of any drugs that would reduce
the fever. Self isolation is a key in stopping the spread
of the flu. The H1N1 flu is contagious and we want to
encourage each employee to take the responsible action of self
isolation, along with other preventative actions (washing hands
with soap, coughing into one’s sleeve, etc.). The Board of
Regents has suspended the requirement for employees who are sick
for more than five consecutive work days to provide a doctor’s
note, in the hope that employees will be encouraged to stay home
if they are ill.
If you have flu like symptoms, we are asking that you share that
with your supervisor when you call in sick. Supervisors
are being asked to report employee name, worksite, and first day
of absence due to flu symptoms and date of return to work.
Group data from these reports will be used to monitor the flu on
our campus so informed decisions can be made by the response
team. Individual information will remain confidential and
will not be used for any other purpose.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation and your concern for
the health of your co-workers and colleagues.
