LIMITED-TERM EMPLOYMENT INFORMATION

The following questions and answers  may be helpful to limited-term employees at resignation or when a limited-term job ends. For additional specific questions, please refer to our staff directory for assistance in determining which staff member can best serve you.

HOW MUCH NOTICE WILL I RECEIVE THAT MY JOB IS ENDING?
No notice is required by law. By nature, limited-term employment could end at any time. Generally, advance notice is provided.

WHAT HAPPENS TO MY BENEFITS AT TERMINATION?
Approximately one third of all limited-term employees are eligible to carry State of Wisconsin fringe benefits. To determine if you fall into that category, check your wage earnings statement. If it says "RETIREMENT YES" under the "Deductions" section of your statement, you are eligible for fringe benefits.

If you carry health insurance, your insurance is paid two months in advance, and Human Resources can determine when your coverage officially ends. You will then have an opportunity to continue the health insurance by paying the full cost of the premium. You will have options to continue most of the other benefits you may carry, as well. Again, Human Resources will provide you with the information and processes to continue these benefits.

You also have several options regarding your Wisconsin Retirement System account. There may be some advantages to keeping your Wisconsin Retirement System account active if you decide to return to State of Wisconsin employment in the future. You will want to discuss your options with the Department of Employee Trust Funds toll free at 877-533-5020, and request the appropriate paperwork to take action.

AM I ELIGIBLE FOR UNEMPLOYMENT IF MY JOB ENDS?
The Department of Workforce Development (DWD) can help you determine if you are eligible to file a claim. Visit the DWD online at www.dwd.state.wi.us/uiben or call toll free: 800-494-4944.

WHAT ASSISTANCE IS AVAILABLE TO ME IN MY EMPLOYMENT SEARCH?
Human Resources has identified several free services available to help you seek other employment. The Wisconsin Job Center of La Crosse County offers a wealth of services, including a 24-hour, touch-tone telephone job line (608-791-0695), personal computers, training assistance for people older than 55, job-seeking reference materials and training, and ongoing workshops on resume writing, job seeking strategies, and career exploration. Contact the Job Center at 608-789-5627 for more information about these programs.

WHAT IF I WOULD LIKE TO BE CONSIDERED FOR EMPLOYMENT ON CAMPUS IN THE FUTURE?
Though you do not have any contractual rights to future employment as a limited-term employee, applicants with the necessary skills and previous UW-La Crosse experience are often in demand as LTE opportunities become available. Please keep your application updated with Human Resources as long as you are interested in employment opportunities. Applications are kept for six months, at which time they are destroyed. If you contact Kathy Ring at ring.kath@uwlax.edu  or call 608-785-6499 prior to the six months and verify that all information is still current, the application can be kept an additional six months. All applications more than one year old are destroyed and a new application must be completed.

You may also take the State Civil Service exams when they are offered for permanent employment opportunities. Visit the Wisconsin Department of Employment Relations  for more information about the exam process and a tentative exam schedule.

WHAT IF MY ADDRESS CHANGES DURING THE YEAR?
Please notify Human Resources by completing a Change of Address form so that we ensure you receive your W-2 statement at tax time.
