Symantec Anti-Virus Installation

UW-L's Symantec Anti-Virus is only licensed for installation on UW-L Staff and Faculty computers.  This is not available for use by students at UW-L.  Installation on other computers is a violation of the license agreement and is considered piracy.  If you believe you currently have a virus on your computer, please do not try installing Symantec Anti-Virus.  If your computer is currently compromised, it is likely that the installation will not complete properly, thus exposing you to more exploits and potentially causing serious harm to your system.  If you believe you have a virus on your computer, please use a free, online virus scanner before installing Symantec Anti-Virus.  Although we do not support any anti-virus software other than the campus licensed version of Symantec Anti-Virus, we recommend using an online scanner such as Trend Micro's HouseCall or Microsoft's Live OneCare Protection Scan.  Both of these are online scanners that require a valid internet connection.  They do not install software on your computer, but run in a web-based platform to scan your computer.

Suggestions for student anti-virus use can be found here.

  3. Select the version of the Anti-Virus software that is appropriate for your operating system and let it install.  If you are unsure if you have a 32-bit or 64-bit operating system, please find out before trying to install.  You can find out by right-clicking on "My Computer" (Windows XP) or "Computer" (Windows Vista) and selecting "Properties".  In here, it will let you know which version of Windows you have installed on your computer (32-bit or 64-bit).
