Frequently Asked Questions about CAS

CAS Shell Program

The CAS Shell program was designed to help users access the CAS system in a way that will avoid them accidentally closing the program (or going to another web site) without logging off. It also helps format the screen in landscape with minimal margins for easier printing.

After you have downloaded and installed the program, double-click the Key icon to run the program. You will be taken to the CAS login page. You can visit no other web sites and must use the BYE trancode to log off. If the system is not responding and BYE does not work, click the small red square in the upper right corner to perform an emergency exit.

Installing CAS Shell

  1. If you have a previous version of the program installed, please go to the Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the CAS Administrative Shell. Failure to do this will result in two versions of the program being installed.
  2. After clicking the link below, choose to Save the program and browse to your Desktop and click Save.
  3. On your desktop, find the icon for the Campus Administrative System and double-click to run the installer.
  4. Follow the prompts on screen and accept the defaults for installation.
  5. Launch the program by double-clicking the key icon created on your desktop and/or quick launch bar (Quick Launch only available on Windows 2000 or XP.)

Tips for Program Use

  • The program works the same as using CAS through Internet Explorer except that it creates a "shell" around the site so that the program can only stay on the CAS site. The back and forward arrows in the shell will allow you to go back and forward through the pages you have visited in CAS.
  • In order to exit the program, you MUST type BYE as the trancode. Attempting to close the window without doing a BYE will display a warning. After typing BYE the session is ended and the window is closed automatically.
  • In an "emergency" when the server is unavailable and the BYE trancode fails, you can do an emergency exit from the program by clicking the small maroon square in the upper right corner of the program (below the "X").
  • Click the print icon to see the page automatically laid out as landscape with minimal margins in print preview. You can then print the document or change the set up by clicking on the Page Setup button. Click the "X" in the upper right corner to close the print preview window. This will not log you out of CAS.

CAS Passwords, Security and You

Every 60 days your CAS password will expire automatically. You are reminded upon login when you are close to this date. Many users login infrequently, however, and miss this warning. They are then locked out of the system and forced to call the ITS Support Center for a password reset.

A good way to avoid the password reset problem is to add a reminder to the first working day of every month on your calendar to reset your password. Passwords are reset using the trancode PWCNG.

Because of security concerns when dealing with this type of system and data there are several things you should consider for your own computer:

  • Windows 2000 or XP Professional are the most secure desktop environments
  • Make sure your passwords for all accounts on your computer are at least 8 characters long with combination of letters, numbers and symbols. Don't leave passwords blank, the same as your user name or use the word password. Avoid words found in the dictionary.
