Wireless Network FAQs
Is wireless available in the dorms? All the residence halls offer full wireless coverage as of the fall of 2009. Even though there are access points positioned throughout each residence hall, wireless access is not guaranteed in the residence halls. Because of the size and materials used in the construction of the residence halls, you may encounter a weaker than needed signal strength in certain areas of the building. Wired network connections are available for every student in their room in their residence hall. This being said, students are not allowed to add their own wireless access points to the network for security reasons. Violations to this rule will not be tolerated.
Do I need anything special to use the wireless network? Yes, your computer will need a wireless network card. This is different than the network card you use to plug the cable into while in your residence hall. A wireless network card is a separate piece (or built into most newer computers - check your computer's specifications). Currently, our network is set up for optimal use via 802.11g wireless cards, but 802.11b (the previous technology) and 802.11n (the latest technology) wireless cards will also work on the campus wireless network.
Is there somewhere to get help if I followed the
directions above but the wireless setup did not work?
Yes, there is for all Windows PCs and Mac Computer
wireless configuration issues. If you have properly followed
the directions and are still unable to connect to the campus
wireless network, please contact the ITS Support Center.
As stated above, the ITS Support Center does not
offer any assistance with wireless or other issues with iPod
Touches or iPhones.
