Fall 2009 Jazz Ensembles Auditions

Thanks for your interest in auditioning for the UW-L Jazz Ensembles.
This page contains everything you need to know about the audition process.

Audition Dates

Saxophones and Brass - Sept. 8 2:15 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
Rhythm Section (piano, guitar, bass, drums) Sept. 9 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m and 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m

Directions:

  1. Download the file for your instrument. Brass players choose a part within your range.
  2. Prepare the music to the best of your abilities, do not be concerned with the tempo marking!
  3. Sign up for an audition time on jazz bulletin board - Room 56 CFA.
  4. Play with a steady tempo in a swing style with good jazz articulations.
  5. In addition to the excerpt:
    Brass play a Bb concert scale in 1/8th notes to demonstrate range.
    Saxes play a Bb concert scale slured in 1/8th notes.
    Drums will be asked to play in other common styles (Samba,Bossa Nova, Funk, R&B) as well as various swing tempos.
  6. Sight read short examples of Big Band music.
  7. Improvisation is optional for most but required for a jazz chair, players should play on one of the following; blues in F, G, Bb, Rhythm Changes.

The first rehearsal for both bands will be on Friday September 11th.
