Literacy Alive!

Our Literacy Alive! program, held this year on February 28, 2009, was a huge success. The event was held at the library, on the same day as their annual book fair, which ended up being beneficial to both our organization and the library.  People came for one event and stayed for both.

New this year, we collected books and gave them away to the students who attended.  Alexis Mayer, our Vice-President, and her family created a Giving Tree Bookshelf, which sat in the Morris Hall student lounge.  Students and faculty made great contributions, leaving books on the shelves, and we also received a donation of over 100 books from Scholastic, Inc.  Because of our ample donations, not only did each child receive a book, but we had extras left over to donate to other worthy causes.

The Literacy Alive! program this year also took the award for Outstanding Program at UW-L's Celebration of Involvement.  We are grateful for this honor, and look forward to enhancing the event even more next year!

Waiting for students to arrive...

Ready with our activities!

Tim and Mike had a big success with their "Dancing Pants" station.

This station even received coverage in the La Crosse Tribune. First they read a short poem...

And then they turned on the music and the disco ball and danced away!

Look at those Dancing Pants.

We squeezed into some tight corners, hiding behind books--but it worked out just fine!

Reading away

Everyone enjoyed making their own rainbow fish out of home-made pla-doh.

A finished pla-doh fish!

Children chose from all these books to take home.

Hard at work on activities

If you give a mouse a cookie...

he will ask you for some milk.

Children of all ages enjoyed the event.

Literacy came alive with the crafts we made after each book.
