The Spanish Language Faculty and Instructional Academic Staff of the Department of Modern Languages invite you to the Fall 2009 Advising Day for Spanish language programs and for those students preparing for, or interested in, Study Abroad Programs, Study Tours and Service Learning Projects. Spanish classes will not be held during the advising session (9-2). Students are expected to take care of their advising needs on this day.
The following will be
available to students throughout the Advising Day in Port O’ Call:

• General advising with
language faculty for students in Spanish classes
• Find out about course
offerings for the Spring 2010 semester
• Advising with
language faculty for Spanish Majors, Spanish Majors with a Business
Concentration and Spanish Minors
• Study Abroad/Study
Tours/Service Learning Projects advising; complete the Study Abroad Academic
Plan with program-specific language faculty
• Advising and
information on study abroad programs and international internship opportunities
provided by the staff of the Office of International Education/Study Abroad
• College of Liberal
Studies advising: graduation requirements, declaring a Spanish major/minor
• Peer advising with
students who have returned from study abroad and who will be available to chat
with you individually about their experiences
• Information about
student scholarships (specific to Spanish majors)
• Information about the
Spanish Club and the Spanish National Honor Society
• Information about a
new summer study program opportunity for prospective health care professional
being offered in Costa Rica through UW-Eau Claire
(great for Spanish majors/minors who are completing a major or a minor in
the health sciences areas)
Breakout sessions on a variety of topics will be
presented in reserved rooms in Graff Main Hall (see session
descriptions and room locations below)

information about the wide array of study abroad programs and

TIM WALLS, COLLEGE OF LIBERAL STUDIES-DEAN’S
OFFICE will be available from 9-12 to evaluate
transcripts and the Advisement Report (AR) [replaced the SNAP
report] forms, to advise students about to graduate, to advise
on declaring a major/minor in the College and to assist with
other college-related advising.

BUILDING BRIDGES IN BUNCHE, ECUADOR: SERVICE LEARNING PROJECT
When the snow is falling in Wisconsin, would you like
to spend some of your time over J-term helping a coastal
Ecuadorian village in need of assistance? Then the service
learning project in Ecuador,
Building Bridges in Bunche,
is for you. Erik Kahl, student leader of the Service Learning:
Ecuador program, and Dr. Darlene Lake, Modern Languages/Ecuador
program faculty advisor, will describe this new opportunity.
Experience a very unique culture and open your hearts and create
lifelong friendships in the process. Assist with projects such
as minor construction, reforestation work, sanitation work,
working in the local school, assisting with local harvests, and
much more.
9:55 a.m.-10:50 a.m. GMH 208 HUMAN RIGHTS IN GUATEMALA
Connie Vanderhyden, Director of Multicultural Student Services, will talk about the Guatemala Accompaniment Project (GAP) and about ways to become involved in Human Rights Advocacy in Latin America. The Guatemala Accompaniment Project was formed to respond to the request of the Guatemalan people who have suffered threats, harassment and violence for many years. Accompaniers are trained U.S. volunteers who live side-by-side with at-risk communities and organizations, providing a measure of security and creating space for the Guatemalans to organize and defend their rights.
9:55 a.m.-10:50 a.m. GMH 205 CAREERS/DOMESTIC INTERNSHIPS
Karolyn Bald, Career Services, will provide information about internships and
jobs related to the world of languages. Special emphasis will be put on how to
better emphasize your language skills and your international experiences.
11:00 a.m. – 11:55 a.m. GMH 208 THE GATE PROGRAM IN MEXICO.
Sister Marie DesJarlais, Director for Global Awareness Through Experience (GATE) and Melissa Wallace, Senior Lecturer, Department of Modern Languages, UW-La Crosse, will provide information about this cultural immersion experience in Mexico City and Chiapas that explores women’s reality, the struggle for Indigenous rights, and other issues of social justice. Find out about the efforts of grassroots organizers who are fighting for human rights, sustainable economies/agriculture, and alternative models to neo-liberalism and corporate globalization.
11:00 a.m. – 11:55 a.m. GMH 205 INTERNATIONAL INTERNSHIPS
Sandy Sieber, Study Abroad Office Coordinator, will provide information on international internship opportunities in Mexico and other Spanish-speaking countries.
12:05 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. GMH 203 TEACHER EDUCATION
Prof. Jean Hindson, Department of Modern Languages will provide an information session for students who are interested in teaching any modern language. Dr. Hindson will be joined by Dr. Joyce Shanks, School of Education, to describe the Professional Development School opportunities at Northwoods International Elementary School. Modern Language majors and minors planning to register for Field Experience II in spring 2010 should attend the first part of this meeting. Any modern language education students planning to be certified to teach and who have not yet attended a modern language education information session are urged to attend. See Dr. Hindson for important information if unable to attend.
12:05 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. GMH 205 MUSIC AND PERUVIAN DANCES / SUMMER STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM IN PERÚ
Gabriela Dongo, Visiting Instructional Academic Staff, Department of Modern
Languages, UW-La Crosse, from Lima, Perú will present some of the traditional music and dances from the three different regions of her country (coast, Andes and Jungle). Also she will talk about the new study abroad program in Perú, offered during the summer.

GMH 208 UN VIAJE
GASTRONÓMICO POR ESPAÑA
Noelia Cuevas Rojas, Amity Intern, Department of Modern Languages at UW-La Crosse, will provide a presentation about gastronomy/foods in her native country, Spain. Noelia will show how the culture and foods differ throughout Spain. She will also show some advertisements that demonstrate the evolution of the culinary culture in Spain.
12:05 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. GMH 307 GRANADA, SPAIN STUDY TOUR
Prof. Donald Socha, Department of Modern Languages, will provide information about this new summer study tour to be offered in May-June 2010 in Granada, located in southern Spain. This study tour will include coursework in Islamic Culture and Advanced Spanish Grammar with Journaling in Spanish.

GMH 207 UN VIAJE POR COLOMBIA
Jorge Enrique Franco Salazar, Amity Intern, Department of Modern Languages, UW-La Crosse, will provide a cultural overview of his native country, Colombia, South America, and will include information about specific cities and regions, customs, foods, music, and dances. Jorge will also talk about some of the important current events in his country and the relationship between Colombia and the United States.
1:10 p.m. – 2:05 p.m. GMH 205 ALICANTE, SPAIN J-TERM STUDY ABROAD
Profs. Jean Janecki and Melissa Wallace, Department of Modern Languages, will provide information about this new J-term study abroad opportunity (December 28th-January 21st) in Alicante, on Spain’s beautiful southern coast. Course offerings for this J-term include SPA 304, SPA 330 and Medical Spanish.
