Information for Enrolled Students

Program Options : Majors and Minors

The department has programs in French, German, Spanish, and TESOL (minor only) that lead to the B.A. and B.S. For detailed information about each of these options, see Majors/Minors. If you have any questions, or if you need help deciding which option is for you, make an appointment with the Department Chair or Language section head.  Stop by 315 Graff Main Hall to arrange an appointment.  Instructors' schedules are posted right outside their office doors.

Declaration Procedure

Procedure for declaring: Students wishing to declare a major or minor in one of the Modern Language programs should do so in the office of the College of Liberal Studies.  It is to your advantage to do this as early in your program as possible so you can plan your program of study.

Honors Program

The Alvida Ahlstrom Honors Program is available to students with junior standing and a 3.6 gpa in French, German or Spanish course work at the 300 or 400 level.  The program involves a seminar paper or project to be submitted to and approved by the language sectional faculty and additional coursework.

Undergraduate Research

The Undergraduate Research program is available to students interested in pursuing a topic of study related to their language program in consultation with an advisor. Modern Language majors are encouraged to discuss with faculty, early in their academic career, the possiblity of applying for an Undergraduate Research Grant. Because you are likely to be out of the country for a semester or a year, it is especially important to begin thinking about this possibility before you go abroad. It is even possible to apply for a special International Undergraduate Research Grant to work on your project while you are abroad. For further information, go to http://www.uwlax.edu/urc/. For examples of research conducted by Modern Language students in the past, go to http://www.uwlax.edu/urc/JUR-online/index.html and click on volumes V, VI and VII.

Applying for Graduation

Plan to apply for graduation at least one semester prior to the semester in which you intend to graduate.  For example, if you're graduating in the Spring, you'll need to apply for graduation during the Fall.

Make an appointment with an advisor in the College of Liberal Studies to do a credit check.  Plan to do this well in advance of registration. Plan to bring a copy of your SNAP so your coursework can be evaluated (unofficial is fine, off the web).  The final step will be to turn in your intent to graduate form. These forms are available in the College of Liberal Studies.
