Chinese Language Studies
Good Reasons to study Chinese:
- China has 1.3 billion people.
- China is a huge and promising international market.
- China is a country with a rich cultural history dating back 5000 years.
- China is an ideal place to visit and to work in.
- Chinese language is one of the most widely spoken languages used by nearly 1/4 of the world’s population; it is also a reflection of Chinese art and culture.
Learning Options at UW-L and abroad:
- The Chinese language course is divided into two levels in four semesters: elementary level (Chinese 101 and Chinese 102) and intermediate level (Chinese 201 and Chinese 202).
- The two-year course of study enables a student to complete the language requirement for the Bachelor degree.
- The course is conducted in multi-media classrooms where we have direct video and audio access to the language and its cultures.
Study Abroad Program:
- There are opportunities for students of Chinese at UW-L to study in China for an intensive 8-week summer course in language and culture.
- There is also an exchange program in Guilin (one of the top four scenic spots in China), with Guangxi Normal University. Students may choose a semester or a full year program.
UW-L has an exchange agreement with Guangxi Teacher's University which brings a visiting Chinese scholar to campus each year.

Tips for learning Chinese:
- Learn only 40 to 60 most frequently used radicals in Chinese language which form most of the Chinese characters;
- Learn the pinyin (pronunciation symbols) to strengthen and support your Chinese language learning.
