Russian Language Studies

Good Reasons to Study Russian:

  • Russia is undergoing great cultural and economic changes which are increasing its contacts with the rest of the world.
  • There are increasing opportunities for those who speak Russian, particularly in the fields of international relations, political science, history, and business.
  • Russian is the official language of the Commonwealth of Independent States and is taught in all of the Commonwealth schools.
  • Learning Russian can make you a better student. The discipline required to learn another alphabet and a language based on the use of a case system can be applied to other courses. Learning the case system will also help you understand English better.
  • Exploring the traditions of another country gives you fresh insight into your own culture and way of life. This is particularly true with regard to Russia whose culture has not always been open to study.

Study and Work Abroad:

  • There are opportunities for students of Russian at UW-L to study in Dubna, Russia for an intensive eight week summer course in language and culture. For further information, please contact the Office of International Education here at UWL (uwlworld@uwlax.edu).

Course of Study:

  • UW-LaCrosse offers a four semester program which provides students with the basics of Russian grammar and conversation, and an introduction to composition and civilization.
  • The two-year course of study enables a student to complete the College of CLS language requirement for the Bachelor of Arts degree.
  • There are weekly meetings of the Russian Conversation Group involving fellow students and native Russian speakers.
  • There are opportunities to meet and converse with visitors from Dubna, sister city to La Crosse.
