La Crosse Medical Health Science Consortium Phase III Working Strategic Plan

NURSING CLINICAL PLACMENTES

Objective: Work closely with healthcare organizations and academic institutions to collaborate on identifying and decreasing the barriers for expanding nursing enrollments

  1. Expand the number of clinical sites in the regional areas
    1. Inventory the regional healthcare organizations
    2. Expand the number of registered nurses with preceptor training in the regional areas
  2. To better facilitate nursing clinical site scheduling
    1. Continue to strengthen the HSC Workforce Nursing Clinical Education committee
    2. Develop a pilot project for online clinical site inventory
    3. Be open to exploring "non-traditional" ideas on placing students in the regional areas
    4. Share and review best practices among other healthcare disciplines
  3. To increase the amount of nursing faculty available
    1. Inventory the regional healthcare organizations
    2. Explore potential of sharing nursing faculty

COMMUNICATION COMMITTEE

Objective: The Communication Committee's focus is to share ongoing communication that the LMHSC is a valuable asset to the Consortium's service area.

This will be achieved by sharing the LMHSC's initiatives, updates and successes on collaborative projects. These projects would include, but are not limited to, regional activities, healthcare educational programs and outcomes, workforce development, Phase III Strategic Plan outcomes and research activities.

CULTURAL COMPETENCY

Objective: Continue to pursue grant support for the cultural competency project in nursing

  1. Resubmit the federal grant application within the next funding cycle
  2. Evaluate non-federal funding sources, as private foundations
  3. Seek assistance from Consortium partners and Project participants for other sources of funding
  4. Evaluate whether the 'cultural competency concept' has broader applicability, organizationally, or to other health disciplines

POPULATION HEALTH

Objective 1: In consultation with community and health organizations to develop a "Scorecard" on the overall health of the population of the Consortium service area (20 counties)

  1. The Consortium organizations will work in conjunction with community and health organizations to develop a methodology for measurement of the health status of the community on an ongoing and trended basis
  2. The Consortium will function as a coordinator, facilitator and depository of information on community health status

Objective 2: To partner with Consortium members and the regional communities in respect to improving the health of the population in the Consortium service area

  1. The Consortium will be a facilitator of programs to the public and business communities to improve personal and community health

RESEARCH

Objective: Continue to develop area and regional research projects and submit for funding support

  1. Review current projects in respect to role, function, and reaffirmation of participation of each partner in respective projects
  2. Facilitate collaborative research discussions to identify leadership & expertise in specific areas of interest
  3. Continue to seek participation of area and regional organizations in research projects.

WORKFORCE SHORTAGES

Focus: The Workforce Committee will compile data on the healthcare workforce needs of the Consortium's service area. The committee will work collaboratively with academic institutions and healthcare organizations to develop feasible plans to assist with the necessary educational programming to positively impact the service area.

Objective 1: Identify the employer's needs

Objective 2: Identify the needs of the educational institutions to provide the workforce training

Objective 3: Compare workforce needs analysis to educational institutions needs and identify the gaps

Objective 4: Develop Promotional Activities for schools related to workforce needs and educational programs

Objective 5: Coordinate communication and activities to avoid duplication of programs
