Faculty Development / Travel Grants

The Office of the Dean of the College of Liberal Studies supports faculty development with several different types of grants. These include CLS Travel Support Grants, CLS Grants for Summer Projects and CLS Faculty/Instructional Academic Staff Development or Departmental/Program Project Grants.

CLS Travel Support Grants

Request for Travel Support Form (PDF)

The Office of the Dean of the College of Liberal Studies aims to distribute travel funding equitably to departments and programs for faculty research/scholarship/creative endeavors and/or applied projects pertinent to the proposer’s professional or teaching interests. Each year the Dean’s Office will budget minimal travel funds for departments at the rate of $300/FTE.

In order to maintain equitable distribution of travel support, it is expected that departments will use travel funds exclusively for travel—rather than to meet other pressing needs of the department. Travel funds that are not expended by the department by the end of the fiscal year will be transferred back to the Dean’s Reserve.

The Dean’s Office will also provide travel support grants for travel in connection with research/scholarship/creative endeavors, professional service, and faculty development that the departments have endorsed by supporting with department travel funds. The amount of travel grants available from year to year will vary, depending on funding sources.

Allocation of travel support grants will be based on the following priorities, in order from highest to lowest (a to d):

Professional Conferences

  1. presentation of a paper, solo exhibition, or solo performance
  2. service as an organization officer, board member, conference organizer, or juror
  3. session chair, organizer, panelist, group exhibitor, or group performer
  4. attendee

Additional Faculty Development Opportunities

  1. travel related to research/scholarship/creative endeavors, or travel related to continuing education in credit or non-credit courses or workshops
  2. travel related to teaching enhancement
  3. travel related to professional service

Requests for international travel support should be submitted first to the Office of International Education for an International Travel Grant. Applications and grant deadlines are available in that office. Expenses not covered by an International Travel Grant can be submitted to the CLS Dean’s Office. These will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis, with the assumption that departments will contribute significantly to the cost of such travel.

In the event that a paper presentation, etc., is still pending at the time a request is submitted, that fact should be noted. Travel grants may be awarded pending acceptance of the paper.

Travel support requests must be received and approved prior to travel. Requests for travel support can be submitted any time throughout the year and will be considered for funding at the time they are received.

Travel grants are provided for the purpose for which they were requested. The Dean’s Office should be informed if there are significant changes in circumstances, so that the funding can be reallocated. In order to ensure equitable distribution, the amount of funding support initially granted to individuals may be limited. If any travel funds remain by June 1st , individuals may apply for additional travel support.

Stipends for Online Course Development in CLS for Summer 2008

In order to better serve current and new students, the College of Liberal Studies will offer up to ten stipends for on-line course development for courses to be taught during summer 2008 using a fully on-line approach. The College will offer $1000 stipends each for the development of up to 10 separate courses for this project. These may be courses that are already scheduled for the summer 2008 schedule, or they might be additional courses that the Department is ready to add to its schedule. Each application will require the approval of the Department Chair, who will verify that the proposed course will be included in the summer 2008 schedule. Stipends will be paid in the form of extraordinary pay the first of June 2008. Summer salaries will be paid according to the College’s regular salary schedule for summer teaching. Obviously not all courses are suited to an on-line format, but many are. In order to explore opportunities for on-line courses, the College will select as many different kinds of courses as possible. Applications will be reviewed by a peer review committee, which will make recommendations to the Dean.

Procedures for applying:
Interested faculty should submit a cover sheet (PDF) and a proposal of no more than two pages that addresses the following:
• Learning outcomes for the course
• An overview of the course, explaining how the instruction will be accomplished on-line
• Plans for the evaluation of student learning
• Plans to assess the effectiveness of the course
• A brief description of the faculty member’s experience in online education

Applications should be submitted by 4:30 p.m. Monday, November 19, 2007, to the College of Liberal Studies, Morris 235.
