There are many tips that have made a difference with my
studying for Math 175, but there are also things that I wished I would have known
before taking this particular math class. One of the things I knew before
taking this class that was a big help to me was to know and review college
algebra. A friend of mine mentioned this to me before I registered for the class
and told me that these skills would help me out a lot. Luckily for me, I
took college algebra during the summer and it turned out that it did help me
out a lot. Dr. Hoar even mentioned that if anyone has not taken college
algebra yet then those persons might want to drop math 175 and take college algebra
first. The most important thing to me that I wish I would have known
was that this is a faster paced math class than in high school and that the
tests are hard. I thought I knew all the material for the first test, but I spent
too much time on certain problems so I missed ones I could have gotten
right because I ran out of time. I should have paced myself so I had enough
time to finish the test. As the semester went on that concept became more clear
to me. However, I have learned a lot this semester in this class and
study habits that have helped me in my other classes. First, I learned not to
be intimidated by the weekly quizzes and that they were used to help and
keep students on task. Also, remember to do all the assignments and ask
questions during class because most likely other students are going to have the
same questions. Using the tutor lab was a big help because it is someone
other than the teacher trying to help and they are always there when needed.
The main thing I will stress is get help when needed and do not fall
behind! Also, go back and check problems in the homework and tests but do not
depend on the back of the book for the right answer. I learned a lot about
math both inside and outside the class. I hope these tips help as well. Good
luck!
