My Advice to a New Math 175 Student:

Applied calculus (MTH 175) is not an easy class, but it is a good one. It requires a lot of hard work and dedication. There are some things I wish I would have known before I came into this class. First, I wish I had brushed up on my algebra skills. I hadn't taken math in awhile so I had forgotten a lot of key stuff. Chapter R in the beginning of the book is an excellent source of practice. It helped me get back into the swing of things. Another thing one has to do is keep up with the homework. If one falls behind, they are in a lot of trouble. It is hard to cram a lot of calculus into the brain at one time. The next thing is attendance. Coming to class is the most important thing by far. One can only get so much out of reading the book. Interaction with the professor and material is a must. If you combine reading with the lectures, the chances of doing well in MTH 175 are greatly improved, as well as understanding the material. The last advice I can give about this class is to study hard and never give up. It does get frustrating sometimes, but if one keeps plugging away, the answers and comfort with the calc will come. Always keep trying - practice makes perfect. Good luck.

Sincerely,

Dan, Marketing and Communications Major
