MS Degree Completion Program: Prerequisites

The online Master of Science Degree Completion Program enables certified medical dosimetrists to earn a master's degree in the profession with minimal disruption to their lives. The percentage of medical dosimetrists obtaining higher education is increasing. This flexible online program strongly emphasizes professional and academic growth. Advanced program courses such as Operational Issues in Radiation Oncology, Protocols & Studies in Radiation Oncology, and Education and Research courses can enhance competitiveness for advanced level positions with increased pay in areas of management, senior medical dosimetry, education, applications, or research.

The program requires 23 semester hours of credit at UW-La Crosse. These credits are obtained through web-based online lectures and discussions, independent study, and clinical experience. The program consists of:

  • online curriculum, enhancing the ability to juggle busy schedules

  • a 23 credit hour program that can be completed in 3 semesters

  • practicum experience designed to be completed at the current place of employment

The Medical Dosimetry program requires that applicants either have completed the following when they apply, or have a plan to complete the following courses and other prerequisites prior to summer semester before enrollment.  Though many of the prerequisites are science courses, there is a not a required undergraduate major.  Many applicants have biology, physics, chemistry, math, or health professions majors; however, the program has enrolled students that have graduated with a wide variety of other majors. Comparable courses from other accredited institutions are also acceptable.

Admission Requirements

  • Applicant must have an earned baccalaureate degree:
    • A degree in radiation therapy, physics, radiologic sciences, math, computers, or other areas approved by the program

    • Cumulative GPA of 3.0; Overall GPA of 3.0 on prerequisite coursework

  • Prerequisite Courses:
    • (6-8 cr) Human Anatomy & Physiology with labs; or equivalent

    • (6-8 cr) Physics – 2 course sequence; or equivalent

    • (3-4 cr) Pre-Calculus; or College Algebra + Trigonometry; or equivalent

    • (3-4 cr) Biology; or equivalent

    • (1-3 cr) Medical Terminology; or equivalent

    • (2-3 cr) Computer Science; or equivalent

  • Students for whom English is a second language must earn a minimum score of 600 (paper-based), 250 (computer-based), or 100 (internet-based) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) within two years of application to the program.

  • As this is an online program, applicants must meet the program computer requirements which is part of the application materials.
