About the Initial Certification Track

The Master of Education – Professional Development Initial Certification option is for students possessing a baccalaureate degree who wish to obtain licensure to teach while simultaneously earning a Master of Education degree. The program is dedicated to preparing teachers who are active and inquiring learners, leaders, and community members. Students work with faculty advisors to plan graduate programs that meet licensure requirements in certifiable major and minor content areas, in addition to ensuring completion of the ME-PD required core coursework.

Admission requirements: from the 2010-2012 graduate catalog.

Students must:
1.  Hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution.
2.  Have earned a minimum cumulative undergraduate grade point average of 2.85 for all coursework completed.
3.  Have earned passing scores on the PPST, (Reading – 175, Mathematics – 173, Writing – 174) submitted to the
     College of Liberal Studies (CLS) directly through the PPST examination center.

Submit the following materials to the UW-L Office of Graduate Studies:

- $56 non-refundable application fee- checks made out to UW-L Admissions
- Official transcripts from each institution attended sent to UW-L Admissions
- A completed Application for Graduate Studies (online at
http://apply.wisconsin.edu/).

 - Completed application for admission to the ME-PD Initial Certification program. ( Application Form )
 - Submit a typed resume or curriculum vitae.
 - Submit a 300-500 word personal statement per application guidelines.
 - Submit at least one (1) letter of recommendation from someone attesting to your potential as a future teacher.
