Dr. Edward B. Reese, Jr., (Ned), has been employed at UW-La Crosse since 1984. From 1984-87 Ned served as Assistant Director for the UW-L Upward Bound Program. In 1987 Dr. Reese moved to the then Office of Minority Affairs (now Office of Multicultural Student Services) and assumed the role of Coordinator of M/D (minority/disadvantaged) Pre-College Programs. Dr. Reese holds a doctoral degree in Human Development Counseling from George Peabody Teachers’ College of Vanderbilt University. His undergraduate degree is in mathematics from Tulane University.

Dr. Reese was chosen as a national Upward Bound trainer for NCEOA in 1985-86; and has served as liaison for UW-L to the Wisconsin Department of Instruction Pre-College Scholarship Program and targeted pre-college programs within the UW-System Office of Academic Diversity since 1996. Dr. Reese has procured and administered approximately 2.5 million dollars in grants on behalf of local multicultural and low-income youth since joining UW-L in 1984.

Dr. Reese has taught introductory classes in Racial and Ethnic Studies at UW-L and at several local high schools on numerous occasions over the past seventeen years. His interests include: service learning, inter-cultural relationships, mentoring, storytelling, traditional Indigenous spirituality, healthy/holistic life styles, and cross-cultural and cross-generational educational programs. Toward these ends, since 1987 Dr. Reese has supervised programs that have served over three thousand (3,000) UW-L student mentors/tutors and approximately five thousand (5,000) pre-college youth; and employed numerous graduate students and professional staff members. Current pre-college programming includes: the Academic Year “Mentoring and Readiness for College” weekly sessions (five sites), Summer Reading and Enrichment, and the Mississippi River Adventure residential summer camps.  

Since 1980 Ned has participated in Lakota/Dakota community and spiritual life. During the past twenty years, he has been an active member of the Prairie Island, Minnesota, Mdewakanton Dakota community; and travels with the community (tiospiya) to Mankato, Minnesota in the fall and winter, and to Bear Butte, Slim Butte and Pine Ridge, South Dakota in the summer. Ned is married to Wanda Owen-Reese. They share their lives with five daughters: Amanda, Candice, Brandia, Bazille, and Winonah; who range in age from twenty-five to nine years old.
