Circulation Policies

The circulating collection consists of books, government documents, maps, microforms and videos. Reference books, periodicals, and material housed in the Area Research Center do not circulate.

A barcoded UW-La Crosse ID card must be presented when checking out library material.

  • ID cards are not transferable but faculty members may authorize a proxy patron to check out material for them. Please contact the Circulation department, 785-8507, for further information.
  • Faculty members are responsible for any material checked out on their ID card.

Retired UW-La Crosse employees remain eligible for faculty/staff library privileges. A barcoded Retired Staff ID card may be obtained from the Office of Human Resources.

Faculty/staff partners may apply for a Murphy Library courtesy card at the circulation desk.

Adjunct faculty may obtain a barcoded Adjunct Faculty ID card from the Office of Human Resources.

Loan Periods and Renewals

UW-L faculty/staff and retired UW-L faculty/staff:

Books:

120 days, one renewal
Multimedia: 7 days, one renewal

Adjunct faculty:

Books: 60 days, one renewal
Multimedia: 3 days, two renewals

Faculty/staff partners:

Books: 30 days, one renewal
Multimedia: 3 days, one renewal

Books on hold or recall for another patron are not eligible for renewal.

Holds/Recalls

Holds may be placed on books that are in use. When the book is returned the requesting patron will be notified and will have ten days to pick up the book at the circulation desk

Under certain circumstances, books that are checked out may be recalled. Check with the circulation supervisor for this option.

Overdue or Lost Material

Faculty/staff and retired faculty/staff are not charged fines. Once a book becomes 30 days overdue, however, they will be billed for replacement costs. At that point, library privileges are suspended until the record is cleared. Charges are removed and privileges restored when the book is returned.

Adjunct faculty and faculty/staff partners are charged fines. Fines are $.25 per day, with a six-day grace period. Overdue items returned after the grace period will be charged for the entire grace period plus any days beyond the grace period. Borrowing privileges will be blocked when $5.00 in fines or fees have accumulated. When books become 30 days overdue patrons are billed for replacement costs.

The minimum charge for a lost book is $60.00 plus a $15.00 processing fee. Faculty and staff who lose books have the option of supplying the library with a replacement copy rather than paying the $60.00 fee. Upon provision of the replacement copy, a $7.50 processing fee is charged. The replacement copy must be provided within four months and must be identical to the missing item.

Multimedia are presumed lost after 14 days. At that time the same fees as for books (see above) are applied to each item.
