Tablet PC Loan Program
and Use Policy
Six tablet PCs are available for checkout to UW-La
Crosse students, faculty and staff at the Reserve Desk.
Tablets can be borrowed for a 2-hour loan period with
one renewal. Tablets do not leave the library.
Because the tablets are wireless, there will be dead
spots in Murphy Library that may prevent you from
connecting to the campus network and the Internet.
Connection to the Internet may take a minute or two
after booting up the pc.
All files must be saved to either a CDRW or your
online file storage (U-drive). A CDRW/DVD drive is
available as a separate checkout. Printing from the
tablets is not an option.
These tablets are equipped with the following
applications:
- MS Office (the toolbar is in the upper right)
- Internet Explorer (there is an icon on the
desktop)
- Easy CD Creator (there is an icon is on the
desktop)
- Log On (To log on to your student U Drive account;
an icon is on the desktop)
- Additional Tablet Tutorials (Available from the
Start/Help & Support Or Start/Programs/Compaq Tablet
PC Tour & Get Going With the Tablet PC)
Tablet PC Use Policy
Eligible borrowers:
Only students, faculty and staff currently affiliated
with University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, and with a valid
UW-L ID, may borrow available tablets.
Borrower’s Responsibilities:
The borrower is responsible for the proper use and
safe return of the tablet.
Never leave a tablet unattended--you are responsible for
the tablet until you have returned it to a Reserve Desk
employee and it is checked in. Billing charges will be
assessed to you if lost or stolen while the tablet is
checked out to you.
Circulation of tablet PCs:
Tablets and peripherals are charged from the Reserve
Desk and may be used within the Murphy Library ONLY.
THEY MAY NOT BE TAKEN BEYOND THE EXIT GATE.
.
Eligible patrons must present a valid UW-L ID card at
the Reserve Desk as well as sign an agreement about the
borrower’s responsibilities and potential liabilities
before the tablet is charged out. User agreements will
be kept on file for one semester.
Availability is on a first-come, first-served basis…no
reservations.
Only one (1) tablet may be borrowed per person.
Loan duration is limited to two (2) hours maximum. One
renewal is allowed based on availability.
Tablets must be returned no later than 30 minutes
before closing regardless of time charged out.
Patron is responsible for the safe return of the
tablet to the Reserve Desk. The personnel on duty will
check to see that the tablet is returned intact. It is
highly recommended that patrons wait while the tablet is
examined and they should plan for this delay.
A Proof-of-Return Receipt, available at check-in, is
required in the event of a bill or fine
question---please wait for a staff member to give you
your receipt. Whether or not you opt to get a receipt,
the tablet must be given to a Reserve Desk
employee--never leave a tablet unattended on the desk
counter when returning it.
Fines and fees:
Late fees of $10 per hour are assessed for overdue
equipment, with a maximum fee of $50. A fee of $5 or
above will place a block on the patron’s borrowing
privileges.
Fees for damaged equipment will be assessed on a
case-by-case basis. Library Systems and Technology
personnel will establish the cost of repair that will be
passed on to the responsible patron.
A replacement cost of $2,000, plus a processing fee
of $15, will be charged to any patron who fails to
return a tablet.
Tablet PC Use Agreement
The wireless tablets represent a significant
investment in providing University students and
researchers with improved technologies. Your respect for
the equipment and the rights of all library customers
will be appreciated. If you have any questions, library
staff will be happy to answer them!
By signing below, I agree to the following when I
check out a tablet:
- I will not leave the tablet unattended (using the
restroom, talking with friends, etc.)
- I will not tamper with the hardware or software,
or attempt to load or copy software. I will not remove
component parts from this computer.
- I will use the tablet only in the Library.
- I will return the tablet at or before the time it
is due or ½ hour before closing.
- I agree to go to the Reserve Desk immediately if
this equipment is damaged, lost, stolen or
malfunctioning.
- I assume full financial liability for the tablet
and any accessories while they are in my possession.
- I agree to pay late charges of $10 per hour, up to
a maximum of $50.
- I agree to pay all costs associated with theft or
loss of the tablet per the Tablet PC Use Policy
($2,000.00 plus processing fees) while it is checked
out to me. I also agree to pay any costs to repair
damaged equipment as determined by Library Systems and
Technology.
- I agree that the Library and University may use
any appropriate means to collect the amount owed for
fines, damage, or loss.
- I acknowledge that fines result in the loss of
Murphy Library, Universal Borrowing and ILLiad
privileges and prevent transcripts and diplomas from
being issued.
- Library tablets are for research purposes, and I
will abide by the University's Responsible Use of
Computing and Communications Resources and the
Library’s Electronic Information Access Policy.
- I agree that the library is not responsible for
lost or damaged work. Any files saved to the hard
drive will automatically be deleted when the computer
is shut down or rebooted. I will save files to a CD or
my online file storage (U-drive).
- I will not leave the tablet on the Reserve Desk
unless a staff member is present. I will wait for
Library staff as they fulfill obligations to inventory
components and operations, and to provide me with a
receipt.
