Tiffany, Joseph A. The Swanson Site Reexamined: The
Middle Missouri Tradition in Central South Dakota. Sioux Falls, S.D.: South
Dakota Archaeological Society, 2007.
This book presents the results of a reanalysis of the collections
and excavation of the Swanson site in central
South Dakota conducted over a half century
ago. Evidence for indirect contract with Mississippian groups is
present in the form of locally made Mississippian pottery forms and marine
shell artifacts. Swanson is representative of one of several generally
contemporaneous village clusters or communities (phases) that stretch from
north-central South Dakota into northwest
Iowa and southwest Minnesota and comprise the Initial period of
the Middle Missouri tradition.
