Federal Depository Library Program icon

This library is a Congressionally designated depository for U.S. Government Documents.  Public access to the government documents collection is guaranteed by public law. (Title 44 United States Code)

Murphy Library has been a Selective Federal Depository Library since 1965.

The Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) is managed by the U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO).

Our Regional Federal Depository Library is UW-Madison Memorial Library.

Murphy Library has been a Limited Wisconsin Depository Library since 1974.

The Wisconsin Document Depository Program is managed by the Reference and Loan Library (RLL) in the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI).

Our Regional Wisconsin Depository Library is the La Crosse Public Library.

Murphy Library has been a Wisconsin State Data Center Affiliate Library since 1979.

The State Data Center (SDC) Program is a cooperative program between the states and the U.S. Census Bureau.

The Wisconsin State Data Center consists of:
-  the Demographic Services Center in the Dept. of Administration (Lead Agency)
-  the Applied Population Laboratory at UW-Madison (Coordinating Agency)


Staff Contacts:

The Government Information Public Services Librarian has the primary responsibility for helping you identify, locate, and use information available from government sources.  Research help in related areas such as legal resources and statistics is available as well.  Individual consultations and class presentations can also be arranged.

When classes are in session, the Documents office is generally staffed Monday-Friday 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.


Collection Highlights:

The Library Catalog includes 100% of Federal documents received since 2004, about 90% of Federal documents received from 1994-2004, around 80% of Federal documents received from 1976-1994, and a handful of documents received from 1965-1975.

The Catalog also includes all Wisconsin documents received since 1974.

Online government documents can be accessed both through the Library Catalog and through this web site.

The "tangible" documents collections are located on the lower level/basement of the Murphy Library Resource Center.  Here are some highlights (by no means complete!):

As of 12/13/05, Murphy Library selects 50% (3,641 of 7,271) of Items available through the Federal Depository Library Program.

Subject areas emphasized: Business, Education, Health, Physical Education and Recreation (mirroring the subject strengths of UW-L).

Geographic areas emphasized: Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa.
 

Map Library (Geography & Earth Science Dept., 207 Cowley Hall)

Over 40,000 topographic maps. Also, an extensive collection of wall maps, a wide variety of atlases, weather maps, soil and vegetation maps, and economic maps of the regional area and the world.
 

Wisconsin Govt Documents (basement)  (shelved by WiDocs classification)

As a Limited depository we receive approximately two-thirds of state publications which, as defined by the Wisconsin Statutes, are distributed to libraries on the basis of information content, public interest and availability.
