The circulating collection consists of books, government documents, maps, and microforms. There is no limit to the number of items that you may check out from the general collection. Reference books, periodicals, and material housed in the Area Research Center do not circulate.
A barcoded UW-La Crosse ID card must be presented when checking out library materials. IDs are not transferable.
Borrowers are responsible for all materials checked out and are expected to return or renew borrowed items by the due date. A borrower's responsibility does not end until materials have been returned to and discharged by the library.
Borrowers are expected to respond to all library notices and are responsible for notifying the library of address changes or corrections.
| 30 days | 2 renewals | UW-L Undergraduates |
| 60 days | 2 renewals | UW-L Graduate Students |
| 3 days | 1 renewal | UW-L Students |
| 7 days | no renewals | UW-L Students |
| 2-3 hours, 1-day, 3-day, or 7-day | no renewals | UW-L Students |
Books may be renewed twice unless they have been requested by another patron. Overdue books may not be renewed until fines are paid. You can renew your books online, through the library catalog.
If an item is checked out, you may request that a hold
or recall be placed on it through your patron record in
the online catalog or at the Circulation Desk.
Items on hold cannot be renewed by the
current borrower.
Material with a 30 day loan period or longer can be recalled. A recall request will usually alter the due date for the current patron, who is guaranteed 14 days before an item needs to be returned. If the patron has already had the book for 15 or more days, the book is due back immediately. Overdue fines for recalled materials are $1 a day. When the book is returned, the requesting patron will be notified and will have ten days to pick up the book at the circulation desk.
NB: Requesting an item from another UW system library through Universal Borrowing may be quicker than waiting for an item placed on hold or recall.

Materials from the general collection are presumed lost when they are 30 days overdue and the cost of replacement is charged to the borrower. Unpaid library charges can hold up registration, graduation, and the sending of transcripts. If you receive an overdue or fine notice, it is in your best interest to resolve it promptly. To avoid overdue charges, lost books must be reported before they become overdue.
The minimum charge for a lost book is $60.00 plus a $15.00 processing fee. Charges are modified upon return of an item. Items returned within four months of the date presumed lost receive the maximum fine and $7.50 in processing fees. Replacement copies of lost books may be supplied by the patron to avoid the $60.00 charge. NOTE: the replacement copy must be identical to the lost item. Upon provision of the replacement copy a $7.50 processing fee is charged in addition to the overdue charges.
Materials from the reserve collection are presumed lost at 14 days overdue. At that time a minimum charge of $60 ($50 for multimedia) plus a $15 processing fee for each item will be billed.
UW-L students, faculty, and staff may check out reserve materials for a 2-hour, 3-hour, 1-day, 3-day or 7-day period, as specified by course instructors. 2 and 3-hour reserve materials are for library use only. The 1, 3, and 7-day reserve materials are due back by close on the due date. The number of reserve items that may be checked out at the same time is limited to three.
Murphy Library has a security system that is set off when someone exits without checking out library materials. When the security system is set off, individuals are stopped and asked to open any bags for inspection. Please note: Public Library materials, rented videos and some materials from textbook rental will set off the security system. Persons who fail to check out or mutilate library materials are reported to the Student Life Office for disciplinary action. The minimum charge for mutilated items is $50.00.
