Finding Specific Periodicals

How do I know if Murphy Library has access to a specific magazine or journal in any format—whether online through a database, in paper, in microfilm, etc.?

Check the Periodicals Holdings List, which identifies where you can find periodicals in the library, in databases available to UW-L students, and in other libraries in La Crosse.

  • To use the Periodicals Holdings List, enter the title of a periodical (not the title of an article or a topic).

The example below, taken from the Periodicals Holdings List,  shows that Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise is available.

How do I learn more about a publication, such as where it is indexed, if it has a website, who the publisher is, etc.?

Open Ulrich’s Periodicals Directory, and use the search box to find information about specific periodicals.

How do I find publications by a specific association?

Use Associations Unlimited. In addition to identifying associations related to your topics, Associations Unlimited also identifies which periodicals an association publishes.

How do I find if an article has been cited in another article?

Use the “citation indexes” that are included in Web of Science. You can enter information about a specific article and find out if other articles make reference to it. Or, search by subject, author, year, place, etc.
