Title:  Hopewell Time and Materiality
Speaker:  Dr. Mark F. Seeman, Department of Anthropology, Kent State University
Abstract: Over the past forty years, the archaeology of those Midwestern Middle Woodland societies that participated in “Hopewell” relations has progressed, both dramatically and unevenly.  As an empiricist-at-heart, I tend to look at these advances primarily from the bottom up.  What have we learned, why is it important, and have we kept pace with developments in the field at large?  In this talk, I will discuss Hopewell chronology, recent discoveries, and the “fit” they provide with vying interpretations of our most distinctive Midwestern archaeological concept.

To avoid scheduling conflicts, each person can be the presenter on only one paper, although they can be co-authors on multiple papers.  This does not include posters or multiple presentations within a single symposium.

Each meeting room will have an LCD projector, laptop, microphone and laser pointer.  Additional audio visual equipment is the responsibility of the presenter.  Power Point or computer aided presentations must be loaded onto the computer and tested in advance. Symposium chairs will be responsible for their own sessions. We will send specific details to each presenter once papers are scheduled.

Poster presentations are for 2 hours and the author(s) of each is requested to spend the majority of this time with the poster for discussion with conferees.  Posters are limited in size to 48” wide and should include the title, name of author(s), affiliation of author(s), and abstract.  We ask poster presenters to provide handouts that contain the poster text, selected images, and/or references.

All session, symposium and workshop proposals as well as individual presentations must be submitted as attachments to e-mail messages sent to midwestconference2011@gmail.comClick here for a template (rtf file) for formatting the abstract.

Each proposal must include the names of authors and co-authors, each institutional affiliation, title of the paper, and abstract (limited to 150 words).  Do not use any special formatting within the document.  Please submit as a Word or rtf file and include your last name in the file name.

Symposia are limited to 15 participants per session which includes both papers and discussants (for a half-day session)  If you have more than 15 papers, then please divide into two sessions.  Symposia must be submitted as a package by the organizer, with all titles, abstracts included, as well as the proposed sequence of papers.
