The La Crosse Native American Student Association (NASA) in conjunction with the WI Department of Public Instruction is holding a symposium Friday and Saturday at the University of Wisconsin La Crosse from 8:30am to 6pm. The cost of the symposium, which includes lunch, is $60 for teachers for two days or $40 for one day. The fee for students is $10. If costs are a problem please contact us to work something out. The symposium is open to K-12 educators, post secondary educators, administrators, students in all areas of study, and other interested parties.
This conference is being held to help educators and future educators
better understand the role of Act 31 and how to implement it into their
classes. Act 31 mandates teaching about
Native American history and treaty rights in the state of Wisconsin. The symposium will focus on helping educators learn about
important Native contemporary and historical issues, as well as gaining
the ability to authenticate resources to find out which resources are
good and appropriate to use, then how to infuse those resources into
their curriculum in a meaningful way. The
symposium will also give participants the opportunity to
meet with Native leaders and educators, build relationships that will
provide a solid resource base, and learn about Native culture.
There will be a wide range of presenters from various Native nations across Wisconsin who will present on stereotypes, history and culture, curriculum infusion, the history of Wisconsin’s First Nations, Act 31, resource authentication and much more. A complete schedule and list of presenters is available upon request or pre-registration.
The symposium will start at 8:30 a.m. and registration will begin at 8:00 a.m. at the Cleary Center on the University of Wisconsin La Crosse’s campus.
