Social justice is a big thing for
us at the Newman Center and we invite our student parishioners to be a
part of what we, as a parish, are involved in.
Alternative Spring Break
March 15 - 22, 2008 to Kentucky
Why go to Cancun or Mazatlan just to
party away your spring break when you can join us in Kentucky or Montana
to
learn about another culture and maybe help give others a hand up?? This year, the Newman Center offers
1 options for those who want to
plug into a real hands-on mission experience of a cross-cultural nature.
Perhaps you might chose the Kentucky trip. 10 students will go to Vanceburg where the Glenmary
Home Missioners have an outreach to the rural poor of Appalachia.
Here, students will get a good taste of rural mountain life, lore and
music while working on a habitat project, at a day-care center, a nursing
home or where ever the need awaits you.
Next year, we will hopefully return to Montana as well. If things Native American are of interest to you, perhaps you'll choose to
be one of 10 students bound for Crow Agency, Montana
and the Crow Reservation where we will tutor children at Pretty Eagle School and
get an immersion into the life
and culture of the Crow People.
And you will learn so much about yourself in the process! For real faith in action, start
planning ahead. Two great opportunities to respond to Mt. 25:40 -
"When did we see you…"
Salvation Army
Located at State and 8th
Streets, the Salvation
Army depends on volunteers to assist them in many of the
services they provide. You can help us serve their evening meal every
Monday and Thursday evening. We leave from the Center at 4:15 and are
usually back in an hour or so. If this doesn’t work for you, ask about
other possibilities at the Salvation Army.
Place of Grace
This is the local Catholic
Worker House of Hospitality. The Catholic Worker Movement was
founded by Dorothy
Day and Peter
Maurin, and has grown into a world wide movement. When the
schedule allows, you are welcome to join us for the meal at Place of Grace
on Thursday evenings.
Bread for the World
Bread for the World is a
huge organization that works to lobby lawmakers to address issues of hunger and
homelessness in our world. The Newman Center is a member of Bread for the
World. Each year B4W raises money for local food pantries and conducts an
offering of letters, an opportunity for you to write your elected members
of congress to encourage them to support and enact legislation that
addresses the needs of hungry and homeless people. For more information on
Bread for the World, call Bob at 758-0645.
Habitat For Humanity
You probably know that Habitat
works to help rehab older homes, or to help new home owners of need build
their own homes. If you have time on Friday
afternoons or all day Saturday, you can help someone build there own home
and learn some things about one day building your own home, all for the
cost of a few hours of your time. Call the Center for more details.
