25 Projects
are any
of our
Social Justice Outreach Opportunities
Social justice
is a big thing
for us at the
Newman Center. We invite
student
parishioners to
be a part of
what we, as a
parish, are
involved in.
Alternative
Spring Break
Why go to Cancun,
Myrtle Beach
or Mazatlan just
to party away
your spring
break when you
can join us in
Kentucky,
Missouri or
Montana to
learn about
another culture
and maybe help
give others a
hand up?? Each
year, the Newman
Center offers
two options for
those who want
to plug into a
real hands-on
mission
experience of a
cross-cultural
nature.
The Glenmary
Farm in
Appalachian
Kentucky
Perhaps you
might chose the
Kentucky trip.
10 students
will go to
Vanceburg where
the
Glenmary Home
Missioners
have an outreach
to the rural
poor of
Appalachia.
At
the Glenmary
Farm, students
will get a good
taste of rural
mountain life,
lore and music
while working on
a habitat-like
project, at a
day-care center,
a nursing home
or where ever
the need calls
you.
The Bridge in
St. Louis
Missouri
Another option
might have us
going
south to St.
Louis Missouri
to work with
The Bridge,
a center of
urban outreach
to those most
negatively
affected by
today's
struggling
economy, those
living on the
streets of St.
Louis. Here we
will help feed
the hungry by
preparing and
serving meals to
guests of the
Bridge. There
will also be
some down time
so we can enjoy some of
the fun stuff
the city has to
offer.
The Great Crow
Nation of SE
Montana
The other place
we sometimes go
is the
Crow Reservation
in SE Montana.
Spring Break in
Crow Country is
a real
cross-cultural
immersion
experience. Here
student will
work with
teachers at
Pretty Eagle
School, maybe
helping with
special projects
or tutoring
children who
need a little
extra attention.
We will also
spend time with
tribal members
who will provide
a good
introduction to
the Crow Nation
and their
traditions. When
you come home
from this trip,
you will know
something about
Crows.
With either
of these
experiences, you will
also
learn so much
about yourself!
For real faith
in action, start
planning ahead.
Great
opportunities to
respond to Mt.

did we see you…"
Salvation
Army
Located at State
and 8th
Streets, the
Salvation Army
depends on
volunteers to
assist them in
many of the
services they
provide. You can
help serve the
evening meal
every Monday or
Thursday
evening. We
leave from the
Center at 4:00
and are usually
back in an hour
or so. Sign up
in the State St
entrance at the Newman
Center.
Place of Grace
This is the
local
Catholic Worker
House of
Hospitality. The
Catholic Worker
Movement was
founded by
Dorothy Day
and
Peter Maurin,
and has grown
into a world
wide movement.
Sign up at the
Newman Center to
check out the
Place of Grace
on a Thursday
evening. We'll
leave the Center
around 4:30 and
return around
6:30ish.
Bread for the
World
Bread for the
World
is a huge
organization
that works to
lobby lawmakers
to address
issues of hunger
and homelessness
in our world.
The Newman
Center is a
member of Bread
for the World.
Each year B4W
raises money for
local food
pantries and
conducts an
offering of
letters, an
opportunity for
you to write
your elected
members of
congress to
encourage them
to support and
enact
legislation that
addresses the
needs of hungry
and homeless
people. For more
information on
Bread for the
World,
call Bob at
758-0645.
Habitat For
Humanity
You probably
know that
Habitat
works to help
rehab older
homes, or to
help new home
owners of need
build new homes
of their own. If you
have time on
Saturdays, you
can help someone
build there own
home and learn
some things
about one day
building your
own home, all
for the cost of
a few hours of
your time. Get a
group together
and give it a
try.
