Monday:
Salvation
Army (4:15 pm): Twice every week, (again on Thursday) we serve the
evening meal at the Salvation Army and help with clean up after supper. We
will get you there and back. To get in on this, there is always a sign up sheet,
with room for three students, on the table in the State Street entrance of the Center.
We leave from the Center at 4:15 and it takes about an hour.
Sunday
Scripture Hour (7:00 pm, ongoing): this Bible study looks ahead at the
upcoming Sunday readings. This is a sneak preview of the what you'll hear
on the weekend, complete with insights into Fr. Mark's homily,
Bible Study
(8pm):
This starts with something we call Bible for
Beginners, a four week mini course that offers an overview of this book
we call Holy. It will answer questions like: Where did it come from? How
do I find my way around in it? And how can i use it for personal prayer
and enrichment. On the fifth week, we will start a more comprehensive
study of one of the books in the Bible or a biblical theme.
Tuesday:
Catholicism
101: God for Grown-ups (7:00 pm.) If you want to know more about the
Catholic faith and tradition, this one is for you. This year long course
looks at faith and religion in general, then takes a closer look at
Christianity before focuses specifically on Catholic Christianity in
detail. Let your faith catch up
with your body with this adult look at what you might have learned when
you were younger. It is a great preparation for the Sacrament of
Confirmation. Call or email to add your name to the list.
Faith
Matters - (8:30 pm): This group meets in the Bartl Fireplace Lounge. So, you don't know how
to respond to those challenging questions you get from friends about the
Catholic tradition? What it means to you? Why we do this or that? The
Bible? The Pope? Salvation? Mary? You want answers that make sense and
come from the heart? Check it out on Tuesday evenings. Come and find out
why we do what we do. Come and learn how to explain why your faith matters
to you. What do you want to know more about?
Wednesday:
Student
Supper of Substance (5:30 pm): About every other week or so, there’s
a Student Supper of Substance. This home-cooked meal is hosted by parish
families and includes a presentation on a current topic of interest to our
student members. Good stuff for the growing body, mind and spirit. And
it's all free! Sign up at the Center's State Street entrance. The first
supper in fall is just for freshman
and new transfer students. After that, it's open to all.
After
Hours Prayer (9:00 pm): This is an evening set aside for a mid-week prayer
break. Join us in the Newman Center Chapel for a variety of prayer experiences
including Taizé prayer, the Mass or Eucharistic adoration. Join other students for prayer in the middle of
your week. It’s late in the evening, but a great way to call it a day.
Thursday:
Salvation
Army (4:15 pm): Here's another opportunity to help with the meal at
the Salvation Army if Monday doesn’t work for you. Again, to get in on
this, there is always a sign up sheet, with room for three students, at
the State Street entrance of the Center. We leave from the Center at 4:15
and it takes about an hour.
Place of Grace (4:30 pm): This is the local Catholic Worker House.
We go there to be part of another way of reaching out to those in need. If
you sign up for this, your first priority is having supper with the other
guests. After tat, you might enjoy hanging out with the kids who might be
there or maybe you can give someone a break from washing the dishes. This
one might need an hour and a half of your time.
Res
Hall Student Bible Share: Bible Share happens whenever the student
leader can get a group together and wherever works best. This student led Bible study of the
upcoming Sunday readings will get you ready for weekend worship. There are
several of these going on at different times and places. Surely you'll
find one that fits into your schedule. Or you might want to start your
own! We'll get you ready.
Rosary
(9:00): Join students for another prayer opportunity that focuses on
the life of Christ. It's yet another opportunity to stay in touch with things that matter more.
Friday:
Saturday:
Mass
(5:00 pm): Weekend worship is in the Newman Chapel. It'll be great if
you can help out as a greeter, reader, song leader or communion minister -
just check the boxes on the student parishioner card and we'll be in
touch.
Sunday:
Mass
(9:00 am, 11:15 am, [and 7:00 pm when school is in session]): The 7:00 Mass is definitely the
favorite of the students. Stick around after the evening Mass for some
fellowship with other students, and enjoy some of jon’s pretty-good®
home-made store pizza, and jon’s pretty-good® red beverage product. They say they're pretty good.
