Weekly Stuff

Monday:
Salvation Army (4:15 pm) Twice every week, (again on Thursday) we serve the evening meal at the Salvation Army and help with clean up after supper. We will get you there and back. If you are hungry, you can have supper too! To get in on this, look for the sign up sheet on the table as you enter the State Street entrance of the Center. There is room for three students. We leave from the Newman Center at 4:15 and it takes about an hour.

Sunday Scripture Hour (7:00 pm, ongoing):  This Bible study looks ahead at the upcoming Sunday readings. It will give you a sneak preview of the what you'll hear on the weekend, and maybe offer some insights into Fr. Al's homily.

At 8:00 pm, there is another Bible study opportunity that will focus on a particular book or theme of the Bible. This one will start on Sept. 19th at 8:00 pm, beginning with an Introduction to the Book we call Sacred. The next five weeks will focus on the Book of Exodus, then 5 weeks of Genesis. If you like to plan ahead, next semester will take a look at the Gospel of Mark.

Tuesday:
Sacramental Reconciliation (11:30) before the 12:05 Mass

Book study (7:000pm)
Disorientation: How to go to college without losing your mind! Get in touch with Fr. Al to get a copy of the book.

Choosing to be Catholic (7:00 pm)
A series of presentations by a variety of speakers designed to offer a contemporary look at spirituality and what it means to be Catholic in the present age. A regular feature of this evening will be
Fr. Robert Barron's video series simple called "Catholicism". This high-definition series exploring the beauty and richness of Catholic history and tradition is also scheduled to air on public television stations across the U.S. this fall.

Wednesday:
Student Supper of Substance (5:30 pm) About every other week or so, there’s a Student Supper of Substance. This home-cooked meal is hosted by parish families and includes a presentation on a current topic of interest to our student members. Good stuff for the growing body, mind and spirit. And it's all free! Sign up at the Center's State Street entrance. The first supper  in fall is just for  freshman and new transfer students. After that, it's open to everyone.

After Hours Prayer (6:30) Take time out in the middle of your week for some time with the Lord. Before each prayer experience, we'll offer some tips to help you develop a more fruitful prayer life. Mid week prayer will include a variety of prayer forms: Eucharistic adoration, Taize, prayer using guided imagery, praying with scripture, etc. Don't be shy to suggest something you'd like to see us incorporate into After Hours Prayer.
The program for the spring semester, 2012, looks like this

Thursday:
Salvation Army (4:15 pm): Here's another opportunity to help with the meal at the Salvation Army if Monday doesn’t work for you. Again, to get in on this, there is always a sign up sheet, with room for three students, at the State Street entrance of the Center. We leave from the Center at 4:15 and it takes about an hour.

Sacramental Reconciliation (6:00 pm)

Student Bible Share (7:30-8:30 pm)
In the Newman Center's Bartl Fireplace Lounge, join other students to read and discuss the role of the Bible in your life.

Student liturgy of the day (9:00 pm)
A late night liturgy, just for students.

Place of Grace (4:30 pm) This is the local Catholic Worker House.  We go there to experience another way of reaching out to those in need. If you sign up for this, your first priority is having supper with the other guests. After that, you might enjoy hanging out with the kids who might be there or maybe you can give someone a break from washing the dishes. This one might need a little more of your time, say an hour and a half or so.
And by the way, feel free to drop in at Gracie's for lunch on Tuesday or Wednesday when they are open over the noon hour from 10:00 - 2:00.

Friday:

Saturday:
Mass (5:00 pm) Weekend worship is in the Newman Student Chapel. It'll be great if you can help out as a greeter, reader, song leader or communion minister. Just let us know you are interested and we'll be in touch with you regarding training sessions.

Sunday:
Mass (9:00 am, 11:15 am, [and 7:00 pm when school is in session]): The 7:00 Mass is definitely the favorite of students. Stick around after the evening Mass for fellowship with other students, and enjoy some of jon’s pretty-good® home-made store pizza, and jon’s pretty-good® red beverage product. They say they're pretty good.

Sacramental Reconciliation (6:00pm)

And something else

Adopt-A-Student ~ Permanent members of our parish family look forward to meeting Newman Catholic Students. As well, students often enjoy making connections with parish families. To help this happen, you can sign up to be "adopted" by one of the parish families. No, this doesn't mean you get an allowance or the keys to the family car on weekends, but you can look forward to being welcomed into a parish family to share a meal or being part of a family event. You sign up for this on the student parishioner registration card. You'll find that we're big on hospitality here!
