OCW President’s Welcome

Greetings OCW members!

The new academic year has just begun and I’d like to welcome all OCW members back to campus. Looking back, I hope that your summer was everything (or almost) that you wanted it to be. Looking ahead, I look forward to seeing active committee members during our monthly meetings and/or the events that we have planned for this year.

Although OCW presidents usually have a one-year mandat, I agreed last May to serve as president for another year in the name of continuing a momentum that we all had established together. I am very happy to be co-serving with Karmin Van Domelen, who is president-elect this year, and who will be presiding over OCW next year. The Steering Committee will see a few changes also, and I refer you all to our OCW website, where you will find all kinds of updated information about our group, thanks to our webmaster Kate Russell.

This year our organization will be continuing its traditional events, and especially our mission of bestowing scholarship assistance to non-traditional women students under 25. Sharie Brunk and Maureen Wilson are our scholarship co-chairs and they run a smooth and efficient scholarship committee.

This past weekend a group of OCW members participated in the Gundersen Medical Foundation’s annual breast cancer walk. We were part of over 6,600 registered walkers--a far cry from the original 500! It’s always an impressive view to see hot pink t-shirts on people of all ages walking in the fight against breast cancer.

Events to keep on your radar for this fall semester:

Membership drive: Friday, October 4, 2013 in the Hall of Nations, 10:00-11:30 am. This is an opportunity to see OCW friends over a friendly cup of coffee or tea and sweets, pay your annual dues of $10.00 to our membership committee chair Melissa Bingham, invite your campus friends and colleagues to come and see what we’re all about, in the hope that our membership will continue to build. If you can’t make this event, please refer to our membership page (click here) about becoming a member or renewing your membership.

NEW: Girl Rising-film screening: Friday, October 11, 2013 in 1309 Centennial. OCW is all about education and equal access for girls and women. We are co-hosting a wonderfully informative and moving documentary, Girl Rising, about 9 girls worldwide who have overcome astonishing barriers to education. The film has received rave reviews nationwide in the last year (see trailer here). Details are being worked out by Karmin, but we are very grateful to have Campus Climate and the Dept. of Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies on board as co-sponsors. Watch for times throughout our campus publicity channels, such as Campus Connection, or contact OCW.

WWHEL conference: We are a part of the state group Wisconsin Women in Higher Education Leadership (WWHEL). Our Provost Heidi Macpherson has generously agreed to fund members who would like to go to the annual leadership conference (click here for details), held in Green Bay this year on Thursday, October 23 and Friday October 24, 2013. If you are interested in attending, please contact OCW or Deb Hoeth. It’s an excellent opportunity to be exposed to inspiring women in leadership roles in higher education.

YWCA Tribute: Once again, we have hard working OCW members who are leading the charge for UW-L’s nominations for the Coulee Region’s annual award. This award is all about women who are empowering other women and eliminating racism. We will be hearing soon who our campus nominations are this year. Thanks to the organizing group Deb Hoeth, Jaralee Richter, and Kjerstin Lang.

Holiday Social: Thursday, December 12, 2013 in the Hall of Nations, 11:15 am-12:45 pm.
We’ll continue to enjoy a pre-holiday celebration and a chance to hear the little carolers from the Campus Child Center.

Bookclub: Jaralee Richter is our head bookworm. We met in August to discuss Ordinary Grace (William Kent Krueger) and our next book is One Thousand White Women-The Journals of May Dodd (Jim Fergus). We usually meet in Murphy’s Mug once every 2 months or so at noon. Tthe date will be posted in Campus Connection and on our web page calendar.

NEW: Meetings: We are trying out a new system this year to accommodate everyone’s busy schedule. Meetings are still in 2201 Centennial, but we have changed the time to 11:00am-12:00pm. We will also be rotating between Thursdays and Fridays. Please note these dates for the fall semester:

  • September: Thursday 9/12
  • October: Friday 10/18
  • November: Thursday 11/14
  • December: Friday 12/13

Special thanks go out to Amy Sloan, our treasurer from last year, for keeping our financial records straight and transparent, Sue Lee for taking minutes and Michelle Sterz, who will be creating our newsletters.

This organization exists because of the “we, not me” idea that makes group efforts well oiled and constantly up and running. Thank you everyone for all of your ideas, time, and presence. I am excited about this year’s events and sharing them with all of you.

Teri Talpe
