International Scholar House
Welcome to the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse International Scholars House!
The house is fully furnished with five bedrooms and two
baths. The standard bedroom has a bed, desk, dresser, lamp,
and a chair. Bedding and towels are not provided. You may
bring your own or purchase them when you arrive. The average
cost of towels, pillow, sheets, blanket, and comforter will
range from US$75-US$100, depending on your personal
preference. The living room, kitchen and dining room are
shared amongst the residents. Laundry facilities, cookware,
dishes, a television set, a VCR, storage areas, internet
access and local telephone and basic cable service are
provided. To make long distance and international calls, you
will need to purchase calling cards. Smoking is
prohibited in the house.
The rent for the 2013-2014 academic year is US$450 a
month, which includes all the utilities, local phone, and
laundry facilities. For those whose rent is paid by a
hosting department or college, there is a $45 per month
charge to cover bi-monthly professional cleaning services
and high speed internet access. Rent is due on the first of
the month. If the first day of the month falls on a weekend,
rent is due on the first Monday of the month. If you wish to
stay beyond the academic year (or semester), rent is US$120
per week. Rent should be paid in the Office of International
Education and all checks are to be made payable to the
University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. The first rent payment
should include a refundable US$100 damage/cleaning deposit.
The deposit will be returned if there are no damages and all
cleaning requirements are fulfilled before you check out. If
repairs are needed or there are any problems with the house,
contact Sandra Sieber at the Office of International
Education, 1209 Centennial Hall, or 785-8016.
The International Scholars House is within 15-minute walking
distance from the university’s campus. You may also take the
city bus to the campus. The bus stop is only half a block
away from the Scholar House. UW-L offers special bus passes
for faculty for $30 per semester. For information regarding
the faculty bus pass, please contact Vickie Baer at 125
Graff Main Hall when you arrive in La Crosse.
It is very important for you to know about Wisconsin
weather. Winters can be very cold and temperatures can go
below 0 °F. The house has a good heating system, so you do
not have to worry about the cold inside. Once you are
outside the house, dressing appropriately is most important
for your health and well-being. Dress in layers, with a good
winter coat on the outside. Also, wearing mittens or gloves,
boots, a hat and a scarf will help protect exposed skin from
the cold, and possible frostbite. A Wisconsin winter may
last until April.
Fall is one of the most beautiful times to arrive in La
Crosse. The leaves turn shades of amber and saffron. The
average temperatures range from 50° to 70°F. Occasionally,
fall temperatures are hot. There is a central air
conditioning system in the house.
The Office of International Education wants to make your
stay in La Crosse enjoyable. If there are any questions
about the house, stop by the Office of International
Education at 1209 Centennial Hall or call 608-785-8016.
