Guangxi Normal University, Guilin
GUANGXI NORMAL UNIVERSITY
Guangxi Normal University, founded in 1928, is a comprehensive
university integrating liberal arts and sciences, teacher-training, and
adult education. The student population has 6,000 undergraduate
students, 250 graduate students and about 10,000 students undertaking
continued education in various areas. Among the facilities on campus are
a multi-function gymnasium, a botanical garden, and a museum of minority
folk customs. Guangxi Normal University is located in downtown Guilin on
the former site of the Jingjiang Prince's Mansion of the Ming Dynasty,
just one of hundreds of cultural relics. The University has taken the
initiative in promoting international academic exchanges, one of the
earliest to reenroll international students and scholars since the
opening and reform policies of the People's Republic of China.
GUILIN, GUANGXI AUTONOMOUS REGION
Guangxi Normal University is situated in the city of Guilin, a city rich
in scenic wonders, cultural relics and renowned for "having the most
beautiful landscape of mountains and rivers in China." It is the
inspiration for centuries of landscape painters. The area is famous for
its vertical limestone mountains and caves rising above tree-lined
streets, rice fields, and the meandering Li and Taohua Rivers. Guilin
has a subtropical maritime climate with abundant rainfall, many lakes,
and fragrant flowers year-round.
Guangxi Autonomous Region has one of the highest concentrations of Hmong people in China, particularly in Guilin and the surrounding areas. About five hours south of Guilin is the town of Rong Shui, which features a tour of a Hmong village complete with ceremonial demonstrations. In Guilin you can visit the museum in West Mountain Park which will give you an understanding of the many ancient Chinese minority nationalities that live in the Guangxi region, each with their own way of life, customs, and festivals.
Among the sites of historical significance in Guangxi are the Lingu Canal, excavated during the reign of the first emperor of the Qin Dynasty, the Mulong stone pagoda set on the rock by the Li River during the Tang Dynasty, the mansion and tombs of the Jingjiang princes built during the Ming Dynasty, and numerous cliff inscriptions and images.
