Faculty Summer Language Programs

Summer 2008

Faculty and academic teaching staff who may be interested in either learning a new language or increasing their level of proficiency in their research language have an opportunity to attend one of OIE’s summer language institutes.  Designed by our partner institutes, these programs are geared toward beginner and intermediate level proficiencies.

Classroom instruction takes place in the morning for three hours, Monday through Thursday, and is geared toward the appropriate competency level.  One on one tutorials may be available within some programs.

All program fees include the following:

  • Classroom Instruction
  • Administrative Fees
  • Housing (meals may be included dependent upon program)
  • Cultural Activities & Excursions (may be included dependent upon program)
  • Roundtrip Airfare from La Crosse

Prices are subject to change, depending on the strength of the US dollar.

Épinal, France
June 30 ~ July 20, 2008
 Although considerably damaged during World War II, the city today is an active industrial center. It is famous for the images d'Épinal, popular illustrations printed there since the 16th century. Of interest are the remains of a château containing the St. Maurice Basilica with its 11th-century nave. A school of textile weaving is in Épinal.

Frankfurt, Germany
July 2008
Frankfurt is often seen only as a transit hub or a business centre, but it's so much more. It boasts Germany's most spectacular skyline, mirrored in the Main River, and Europe's tallest office building. The city epitomizes modern Frankfurt; it's home to Germany's stock exchange and 400 banking institutions. It's also the country's most international town as more than a quarter of its citizens are foreign. Frankfurt throws more money at the arts than any other European city so you'll most likely catch a groundbreaking exhibition at one of its museums.

Puebla, Mexico
July 1~20, 2008
 Known as “the city of tiles,” Puebla is Mexico’s sixth largest city with more than a million inhabitants. At an altitude of 7050 feet, Puebla has a unique climate. From late April until early November afternoon showers are common, but the days are always warm and the nights cool. It is located near the snow-capped mountain known as “Popocatepetl” which means “the Kneeling Warrior.” The Puebla region is an important anthropological and historical repository. Here, the battle of Cinco de Mayo was fought against the French. It is a town of quaint charm, and hidden convents with Spanish-style patios, flowery arches and “cantera” fountains. A short distance from Puebla is the city of Cholula, famed for its pyramids and many churches.

Application Procedures

Faculty attending a summer language institute may apply for UWL's International Faculty Development Grant.  Forms are available in the OIE Office, 116 Graff Main Hall, and online (http://www.uwlax.edu/provost/grants/pages/sources/IDF.htm).  Deadlines for submission are October 15th, January 15th, and April 1st.

Faculty and Academic Staff are reminded to submit applications to their respective college offices at least one week in advance of the deadline set for the Office of the Provost.
